What is an acceptable weight for adult male yorkie? Hei all, My yorkie, Birk, is one year and one month old. When he was 11 months he was castrated. Now his weight is 4,5kgs and I think this is overweight for a yorkie, isn't it? He eats twice a day, with good appetite and goes for walks at least twice a day. Although we have had winter (Norway) and the walks have not been very long. Do I need to put him on a diet? Has anybody experienced this? What are your male yorkies weight? Would be nice to know in Kgs though :)= Thanks for helping! |
Yorkies comes in all different sizes. :) He may or may not be overweight. It depends on his frame. What does his vet think? We may be able to help better if you can post pictures of him (from above looking down while he is standing). They should have an hourglass shape and you should be able to feel his ribs without pressing too hard. |
Weight for an adult male Yorkie My boy is 5 years old and weighs 15 lbs or 6.8 kg. He is very big for a Yorkie, but not fat at all. You should be able to feel his ribs, but not see them. If you are feeding a good food and giving your dog regular walks and exercise I wouldn't worry about his weight. If he develops a belly or seems fat, you could switch to a weight control food, but at 1 year old he is still practically a puppy! |
Standard is not to exceed 7 pounds, so if you were a breeder, you'd want to choose a dog under this weight, but yorkies come in all sizes. I agree with the other posters it depends on their structure, a dog with a longer frame, and longer legs will need more weight than a shorter dog. The vet was able to tell me a good weight for Joey, and I try to keep him in that range. Usually treats are what causes weight issues, and it sounds like you are giving plenty of exercise. Joey's vet recommended adding frozen green beans (thawed) to his diet, when Joey had to lose some weight. The green beans fill them up without adding too many calories, and Joey loves them. |
Magnus is 4.5 months old and he's about 3.27 kg. There's a ups delivery guy that owns 3 yorkies and he said one of them is about 6.8 kg. I asked my vet if my puppy was over weight and whether I should put him on a diet. She checked him out and told me he's in a good condition right now so there's no need. Unless you're concerned about the whole "standard", you probably have nothing to worry about. :) |
Joey (22 months) is just over 5 lbs, which is about 2.26 kg. Tank (16 months) is 4 lbs, or 1.8 kg. They're little ones! I agree though, they come in all shapes and sizes! |
Yorkie Weight(s) Zipp(Spike) is 15yo and weighs in betweem 8 and 8 1/2 lb. Zoey is 5 yo and about the same weight range. Zack is 4 yo and is around 10 lbs. Zeke is 3 yo and is around 12 lbs. Other pups who are at the rainbow bridge were around 5 lb and 8 lb. The pups comes in all sizes and weights. Love 'em all that's all that matters for me. |
