Yorkie puppy cant poop his butt is hard Hey everyone, I have a 6 week old puppy. Lately he has been having trouble using the bathroom. Everytime he tries to release his bowels I notice him struggling and after he's done trying unsuccesfully he drags his butt on the floor. I touch his little butt and noticed that it was really hard, I believe this is why he can't get any poop to come out. A few days ago I wiped him with warm wet puppy wipes on his but until I got rid of all the hard poop he had around his butt. He was ok for a few days until it began happening again. The area wad extremely hard. Any suggestions on what I can do to help my little one?? |
6 weeks is very young so I hope you've read up on what needs to be done to care for such a small baby.... I have no clue what would cause this "hardness." However, given his/her age, I'd take him into the vet just to be on the safe side. Doesn't sound normal to me, but then again, I've never been with a pup that young. Maybe he's constipated? What are you feeding him? I know that when they're really young, they go to the bathroom (both pee & poop) ALOT due to their small bladder/stomach. However, if he's not going poop on a regular basis, this leads me to believe something's wrong, like some sort of blockage. Please get him checked out to be on the safe side. Hope everything works out well. Keep us updated. God bless :) |
BTW - Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! Hope you find this site as rewarding as all of us have!! Plenty of good advice and knowledge on here from some of the best. Please post pics of your baby soon so we can all ooohhh & ahhhh over him. :D |
Do you think he is just constipated, if so you can try a little bit of canned pumpkin (not pumkin pie filling) to soften his poop. If you think his anal glands are the problem you should see a vet. Maybe a more experienced YT will have better insight.Hope he feels better soon~ |
What kind of food is he eating ? You may want to gradually change over to something designed for such a young puppy.. |

I don't believe he's constipated it's the area on his butt where he poops that's so hard it won't let the poop come out. Right now I'm only feeding him puppy formula milk. Here's a picture of alex just waking up http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...a/9c545cec.jpg |
He probabvly needs the hair trimmed on his butt. He most likely has poop stuck to it. You need to clean him up and trim the hair and take him to the vet. |

wash ,cut hair around bum Baby is young so let him lick a bit of canned pumpkin of a spoon (not the pie filling one) Most important is the vet trust your instincts and when concerned take baby to the vets good luck and Keep us informed |
Is it possibly poop matted in the hair tht is blocking his rectum? I had that happen once with an outside cat because he had runny stool, I didn't know it and it built up on the hair and virtually didn't allow him to poop. I had to catch him and clip and soak it off. He must have been in such pain. He had tried so hard his rectum was pooching. Thankfully once I caught it and medicated him he cleared up. Another thing could be somthing ingested that he is having trouble expelling. How did you end up bringing home a 6 week old puppy??? I think that is way to young for a Yorkie pup to leave mom. |
What we did! I just wanted to let you know that our little boy (11 weeks old) was having the same problem. He could not go poop, he was trying so hard, and dragging his butt across the floor because he was so uncomfortable. When we turned him over to take a look, we could see that it was stuck because of the hair around that area. We put him in the bathtub in warm water for a few minutes and checked him again. We began to think it was a lost cause so we got ready to take him to the vet. Just as we were ready to leave, HE WENT! :D The warm water from the bath must have loosened everything up. Of course we then trimmed the area so that hopefully we can prevent this from happening in the future. I hope your baby is feeling better!:aimeeyork |
Wow- 6 weeks is sooo young. That almost breaks my heart. :unlove: Dogs, like human infants, can get constipated if not taking in enough fluids. Because he is so young I would get him in to the vets today! Is it possible he ingested something he shouldn't have (pebbles, bits of rawhide, etc...)? |
I have had the same problem with my shih tzu. I clean her up , using warm water in the bathtub , and then she can poo again. your baby might be ready for a high quality puppy food by now , instead of just milk. I would get advice from my vet on this . |
You will need to keep the area around his butt very clean and trimmed. The poo is getting stuck and blocking the passage which can cause serious problems. Check him dailey and plan for daily cleanings :) At 6 weeks old he should be getting kibble and even some canned food. I take kibble and grind it up in the blender and leave that for my pups along with plain kibble at well. You can also warm some goats milk mixed with some water into the ground kibble. He definatley needs more then formula at this stage. If you have any questions let me know and I would be happy to help. I have 6 week old pups now and they are still nursing and eating what I just told you. At 6 wks they should still be with mommy. :) |
I noticed that your original post was nearly a month ago. How's your little one doing? |
This happen to Brandi too. I had to take her to the vet. When my mother was in hospice, I wasn't as attentive as I usually am. I normally clean Brandi's butt regularly but with everything I was going through, I was just making sure she was fed and walked. Well, poop had gotten stuck and I didn't noticed. So it just build up until she couldn't poop. I had to rush her to the vet and he told me had I waited a few more days, she could of gotten really sick. He cleaned her up (actually he had to shave the poop off because it was so hard) and gave her a shot of anti-biotics and some ointment for her butt. Ever since than, I always make sure her butt is shaved and wiped. |
