Dental Cleaning... How long is it? What do they do? Kaji has an appointment for Sunday and to be frank, I'M SCARED!!! I'm scared he might freak out and that they'll accidentally hurt him. :( |
Anesthesia or not? Possibility of extractions? I've watched a few dentals...not a big deal (I know it's scary though). Can't remember how long they take, but probably around 20 minutes give or take for the cleaning. |
No extractions, non anesthetic. I know non anesthetic is better but he is just so fidgety! |

Anesthesia for sure so they can do the job in that micro mouth. Deep cleaning, possible extractions, a few stitches to tighten up a canine, etc may take 30 minutes or so. Blood panel, and possible pain med and antibiotic if any extractions or cutting the gum performed. Our 12 year old yorkie had it a month ago, she was home later in the day, a little sleepy the first day, and back to notmal the next day. No more bad breath! She looks like a Hockry Player now when she smiles! |
Now I'm confused. A lot of what I read says to do it non-anesthetic. My vet recommends it, and a second vet that I went to go see about Kaji's LP's also said to do it without anesthesia. :confused::confused::confused: He has no baby teeth left, the vet checked before I had him neutered, so it's just a teeth cleaning. |

I think it's the American College of Veterinary Dentistry (you can see their statement about this online, I think). Also, Ellie's vet has a special interest in dentistry and she only does them while the furkids are under. If you're really unsure, you could try calling a few other vets in your area and/or your vet school. This is something that has interested me for awhile now though, so I think I'm going to look more closely at it... I'd love to be able to do it anesthesia free. |
All my worrying for nothing, Kaji was great! His appointment is done and everything I was so worried about never happened. I thought I'd hear puppy screams coming from the back, it didn't happen. I thought I was going to hear vet techs going crazy cause Kaji was going crazy, it didn't happen. And my worst fear, they brought him back bruised and bloody because he was uncooperative, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! I'm happy to report, yet slightly confused, that on the written report they gave me they put "A pleasure to work with. He's a fine pup." :D:D:D His teeth are sparkling white, his breathe a little mediciney or cleanery (it just smells weird) and he is happy and not traumatized. Great day so far!!! |
