Bully Sticks & Treats??? I have a new 12 week old puppy....when would be an appropriate time to start letting her have a chew stick such as a bully stick and also when she can have little treats as a training aide (liver treats etc). We are teaching her her name right now and to go on the wee pads without treats since she is so new to the environment...but I am wondering how long until I can use treats as in incentive to learn to come and sit and stay etc. :animal-pa |
I am not sure the appropriate age to introduce bully sticks but training treats I would think are okay to start giving. |

I gave Ava Bully Sticks and beef tendon at that age. It's GREAT as it keeps them from chewing everything and anything they shouldn't be. It also keeps them occupied! Treats are fine at any age. I also used the dried liver, and just broke them up in to really small pieces. Giving them treats when they go potty isn't always a good idea as they will rush through the job just to get a treat, and do it somewhere else later. Praise and correction work so much better. You have to have a pee pee and poo poo party every time they go in the right spot. :D You can also use kibble for rewards when practicing sit/stay/down etc. This will keep you from overdoing it on the treats. I even cut each kibble piece in half so we can practice a lot without ruining her diet. :aimeeyork |
Thanks for the words of wisdom everyone. I will be buying her some bully sticks this weekend. She is pretty good about the peepads, but we had two little oops yesterday when she was outside the xpen. Need to put some peepads out there too - I had a little too much confidence ...thought I had a genuis peepad puppy!! lol :animal-pa |
I think now is just fine w/the bully sticks....I give "potty treats", after each potty, but mine go outside, and it's a good way to get them back in the house...I'm sure the neighbors think I'm a nut-case hollering "Potty Treat" evertime I want them in, but who cares, I am a nut-case, w/my yorkies, and I'm o.k. w/that lol...All the best w/your new baby!!! |

Anyway, I started giving Miikka bully sticks around the time he started chewing on things more. He loves them, but I only let him chew on them for a little while otherwise I notice he gets an upset tummy! |
Oh wow, my dogs potty, because they need to potty, not because they're getting a treat...I think, they think, they are getting a treat to come in the house, from the backyard...I just call it a potty treat...I can just say "treat treat", and they come'a'runnin'...I've heard they only take notice of the last word you say, anyhow...As far as bully sticks, I use to just give them, for a little while, and they always chewed them the whole time, but once I just started leaving them out, they just chew them, when they want to, which is not all the time...Usually, after they eat, like having a cigarette...lol |
