**HELP-SICK puppy several tests=no diagnosis** Hi, I posted a thread about my sick puppy who is almost 3 months old but could not access the replies:( So I'm trying again! Her name is Samantha DOB 12/19/09 & she weighs 1.20 lbs. The following outlines Samantha's medical log for the last 2 weeks: -History: 03/03/10 Purchased from puppy shop (2 wks ago). Continued feeding soft food provided by store & added Royal Canin dry food for yorkie puppies & Vita Cal puppy vits. 03/04/10 AM Rushed to Emergency hospital bc had hypoglycemic incident(glucose levels dropped to 50's), admitted & stayed in incubator-like crate for 3 days. During her stay she was treated for hypoglycemia, parasites & upper respiratory infection. 03/06/10 Came home with one final dose of parasite meds & anitbiotics. She is being fed every 2-3 hours. 03/08/10 Vet Follow-up & glucose levels in the 130's. Still being fed every 2-3 hrs. 03/15/10 Vet Follow-up & glucose levels in the 90's. Lab work for CB & Bile acids. Still very congested so back on antibiotics (higher dose & longer period) & ointment for discharge of eyes. NO WEIGHT GAINED since last wek:( 03/16/10 Lab results- Liver values were normal but anemia has been diagnosed. 03/17/10 Stool sample for parasite testing & treated for parasites (again) just in case this is the cause of anemia. We are still feeding her every 2-3 hours but she refuses to eat most soft foods. Tried a/d, holistic/organic soft puppy & dog food, baby food(no onion or garlic powders). We have to force feed her the soft food with a syringe & she only eats Royal Canin dry puppy food voluntarily. Per vets advice we tried cooked chicken & she is drinking the broth but not eating the chicken. She is having solid not hard & easily passed BM's (3-4 inches long) every evening & urinating throughout the day. She definitely does NOT have the energy of a 3 month old puppy & can sleep all day & night if we did not wake her up for feedings:( Our biggest concerns are the lack of energy to thrive & not gaining weight!!! There are a few hours in between that we've seen her playful & wagging her tail but then suddenly regresses. Please share any thoughts, ideas or experiences.. Thanks, Martha :aimeeyork:confused: |
Give her some Nutrical! I would also suggest putting some Pedialite in her water for hydration. Continue to keep a very close watch on her. Hopefully some of the other YT members will tune in here with great advice. I wish you well with her. That place you bought her from should be banned because they sold you a SICK puppy, unfortunately as most pet stores do. Did you contact them? |
Hi...welcome to Yt and I'm so sorry you're dealing with a sick little one. The anemia could be responsible for your baby's lack of energy. Is the anemia a result of the parasites? Hopefully now that she has been treated for them and the URI she will get better. If she is eating a dry food somewhat, maybe you could find a kibble she likes better than the Royal Canin. There are better foods available, perhaps one she would like better, that would benefit her and allow her to gain some weight. I found your other thread here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...onths-old.html |
Because she is so small and your regular vet does not seem to be getting to the bottom of this, I think I'd consider a specialist/vet school if this continues. If she has been like this since 3/4, she needs an expert... |
I agree with Ellie May ~ you may need to move onto a specialist. What were her Bile Acid results??? You can get Vanilla Children's Pedisure and force/syringe that into her as meals as well... |
Having anemia is the cause of her weakness and lack of energy. What is causing the continuation of it? Your vet does not seem sure of the cause, so I would be seeking vet school/specialist as Crystal (Ellie May) suggested. Do you have a health guarantee from the pet shop? |
Help sick puppy several tests - no diagnosis I have heard of something called Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. It can be caused by too many vaccinations being given and causes the immune system to be overwhelmed resulting in an autoimmune disease which is what Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia is. |
