ribs?? My DH and I were eating baby back ribs and I thought man wouldn't my babies enjoy this. I know definitely not chicken bones, but what about rib bones?? |
NO Absolutely NO cooked bones you can give them bones that have been basted, that the sell in the pet stores, but no bones that have been cooked. |
Why not cooked bones?? I know that chicken bones are dangerous but why not the rest of them? My in laws give their black lab rib bones all the time, but I did not know it was not good?? ( my baby can't eat meat :( so I have never tried it on her) |
Any cooked bone can splinter, not just chicken. You can give them frozen raw bones that you get from the pet store or even from the butcher. |
Definitely no cooked bones but raw ribs are okay! Mine love raw ribs and can chew on them for hours. Just out of curiosity, lysiane_souris, what do you mean by your dog can't have meat? |
I've never about giving them rib bones but my husband gives them raw deer bones... they love them! Usually his dog breaks it down and they grab the smaller parts. |

I souldnt say she cant have meat, but she has IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) and CANNOT digest anything... she is on prescription food only... anything that is not her prescription she gets diherea pretty bad...:( |
I give my two cooked bones. I bought beef rib bones from the pet store that were cooked, too. The package said they were roasted. Mine always love them and have never gotten hurt. I have been looking for safe chew toys lately and it seems like someone always has something bad to say about EVERY type - except ones they sell or ones that cost a fortune to keep a supply of. My poor Daisy has been chewing on a sock the past few days. Who knows - maybe baby socks are the secret perfect chew toy... |
My best friends Yorkie choked to death on a rib bone:(. A great alternative is a sterile marrow bone, they are hard as rocks. I fill the center with peanutbutter and my little girls love them and best of all they are safe. |

The only bones I have seen packaged in pet stores are basted. Not roasted. Do you want to take responsibility for someones dog getting injured? |

I don't control what people give their dogs - I was just giving my opinion. If someone's dog chokes on a bone it isn't my fault. Maybe if they choke on a piece of kibble, you can blame the manufacturer. Or how about if they jump off the couch, break their leg, you can blame the maker of the couch!!! Geez - there are so many people on here who are so rude to anyone that doesn't agree with every little thing they say. I GIVE COOKED BONES!!!! SO SUE ME!!!!!!!! My dogs - my decision. Your dogs - your decision. If you only want a vet's opinion, maybe you should ask a vet and not post on a forum. |

If roasted bones are being sold, I assume they know just how long and at which temperature they can be cooked to be safe for dogs. I will leave that to the experts and will be willing to pay the price for the bone rather than to risk the life of my dog or a $1000 vet bill to remove bone splinters from my dogs intestines. |

you may not have had problems but doesn't mean it can't happen. I've done raw with my cockers but not with my yorkies.....mostly because their tummies don't handle meat (cept chicken) and they're messy. I didn't see anyone rude in their replies at all - but your reaction was really strong .... this site is about ADVISE and opinions. No one here is a vet but plenty of people know what they're talking about. Did you not see the post by '2girls' ? Choking happens quickly and can be fatal. what if someone DID take your advice and the dog did choke ? Isn't it better to be safe rather than sorry ? |

As much as I appreciate your opinion and information on what you feed your dogs, I must remind you that it is your opinion, and not a fact. Before false information is given to a member asking for advice, please educate yourself. Just because you DO something, it does not make it right. You have been lucky that your pups have not choked or had bones splinter and require an expensive surgery, if they survive. Things That Are Dangerous For Dogs Sherry's Place Myths About Raw: Are bones safe? Petville: Raw bones or cooked bones.. are either safe? There are many "chew" alternatives that can be given in small amounts. Bully sticks, Himalayan Chews. Also, please see the attached X-ray photos which show the consequences of feeding bones (yes, even RAW bones!).. I really appreciated this quote from Dr. Dunn "Just for fun, though, lets assume there are great benefits to be derived from feeding bones, but with that benefit comes the slight chance that drastic major surgery may be needed to save your dog's life as a result of feeding those bones...WHY DO IT??!! Very nutritious foods are available, some have ground bone as part of the recipe and the ground bone poses no threat." To the OP, if you have any questions on where to get bone alternatives, please PM me. :) |
