Flea & tick preventative
 
For those of you that use flea & tick preventative, how often do you use it? Do you just use it in the spring/summer months or is it better to use it all year?

I've never used flea & tick preventative with Sasha, but I'm back and forth between my parent's house and a house I'm living in with a co-worker. The house I'm living in with a co-worker is a little more out in the country so I know I'll have to start using preventative when I have Sasha out there with me, but I'm just wondering if it's better to start using it year round or just during the spring/summer months.

Any input is appreciated. :D

I have to use flea control (Advantage) year round down here in North Carolina, but since you live in Michigan, you may be able to get away with taking a break during the really cold winter months. Have you asked your vet for his opinion?

That was going to be my next course of action. I was just curious what other members did. I had thought about just starting to use it year round so I wouldn't have to worry about it. After all, you never know right?

Jackson gets K9 Advantix for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and Iverheart Plus for heartworm. I don't use these medications from November-March typically... I was just at the vet's yesterday and she said since it's been so cold here, it wasn't necessary. I think it depends on your climate.

IMO, you can probably stop during thew winter. You also don't have to give it once a month (in the case of Frontline). You may be able to get away with once every three months. Some wouldn't want to do it that way because there is a higher chance of getting fleas, but I wouldn't want to do it monthly if every three months worked... Heartworm prevention would be totally different. It should be given year-round in MI.

We give Interceptor and FrontLine Plus all year round. I sometimes take a break in the winter but in our area the recommendation by our vets has always been to keep them on both all year round. Our dogs do go out in the yard and there are lyme ticks everywhere.

I give her heartworm prevention yearly. I've just never given her flea and tick preventative before. I suppose from now on I should. It's better to be safe than sorry, even if I wasn't living at the other house. Thanks for your input.
