Urinary problems? Should I be worried? Ruger recently had a urinalysis because he was peeing everywhere. The vet gave him some antibiotics just to be safe, but she also said they had to get the pee off the floor. :rolleyes: He completed the antibiotic treatment, and I wanted another test done to make sure he was clear, so I got a good sample and took it in today. The vet, another one, said she saw some red and white cells and also some crystals. She wants to do another test to make sure, but said they may want to do an x-ray or sonigram when he goes in next week, and goes under, to have some baby teeth pulled. Should I be worried? BTW, after some serious crate training he's had very few accidents. Today he even brought me his leash when he had to go out. Very cool. :D |
The cause of the crystals definitely needs to be determined. Often times once a dog has had crystals they are prone to them and are usually maintained via diet changes. Lack of excerise and long confinement is also considered a cause of crystals. |
Hmm. He's only 6 months old. He wasn't confined until I started crate training him, and that wasn't for long periods except at night. He also got a lot of walks when I started. Plus, he spends a lot of time with my girlfriend's dog, and they play a lot. I feed him Nutro Puppy Bits. |
Sounds like my vet is going to put Ruger on a prescription diet. I hope this isn't permanent. |
Has your vet recommended a food yet? Topper recently had surgery to remove bladder stones which upon analysis, I was told, were calcium oxalate stones. Our vet put him on Hill's prescription diet u/d which is low protien and low calcium. I have been looking for other options as Topper doesn't seem to care for this food at all. Thanks for the prompt reply. I've been dealing with vet techs and assistants, and it's time to talk to the vet himself. After doing some research on the net, it seems the cause needs to be determined and THEN we can come up with a treatment. While it doesn't sound too serious at this point, I'm worried this is going to be a chronic thing. Meanwhile, some advice I'm getting off the Net simply says crystals are caused by an infection. Get rid of the infection and you get rid of the crystals -- regardless of diet. I'll keep you posted. |
Well, I finally spoke with the vet, and he said it's not uncommon for dogs to have crystals in their urine, and because Ruger is so young it's very doubtful he has kidney or bladder stones. He's going to take a sample directly from his bladder when Ruger is knocked out, but he said he's enclined to do nothing, no diet no antibiotics, as whatever infection he had is gone now (latest urinalysis). The vet said if Ruger shows signs of straining or peeing everywhere we'll take another look, but the fact that's he's trained at my house, but pees all over my girlfriend's house, is a behavioral problem and not caused by the crystals. So, I'm not as worried as I was, and hopefully the urin draw he does tomorrow may yield exactly what the problem is. He even said it's possible a draw directly from the bladder may show nothing -- Ruger is pretty low to the ground. ;) |
Glad to hear the vet thinks it is nothing. Now lets talk about this peeing issue...all of the gf's house huh...is he trying to tell you something? Like maybe he doesn't want to share!!!!! Let us know what the vet says. Hoping for the best. Tammy & Topper |

Nah. Ruger will jump in my gf's lap in a heartbeat, and she loves him, too. Heck, she got him for me. Still, she's not too impressed with all the pee. :) Ruger is very dominant towards her dog - an eight-year-old Westie. I wonder if all the pee has anything to do with that. |
