How to help trachea problem? Isla has been consistantly doing a goose honk for awhile now. At her last appointment I told the vet about it and he palpated her throat and got a minor reaction. He said it wasn't much to worry about but just watch her weight as being overwieght would intensify the problem (she's about a pound overweight according to him-6.3 lbs). However, she honks everyday at some point now. It isn't always when she's wound up. It's usually after we get home and let her out of the kennel and she's excited to see us, but she's moving slowly after her nap-streching-as she gets out. She could be barely moving! Or another frequent time is at night when she's on the bed right after she jumps up or after she'll twist around to clean something. Obviously if you touch her throat wrong, have a leash on (she almost always wears a harness) or even at randam times she'll honk. I feel so bad! Her whole body heaves and I just don't know what to do to make it better! Any suggestions? Do you think it's a trachea problem? |
Are you sure it is a collapsed trachea that is causing this? I know you said the vet got a minor reaction when he palpated the trachea, so she may indeed have one; but the fact that you said her body heaves makes me think it might be reverse sneezing. First you need to be sure that is what it is. It could be that she is doing both...and maybe the CT is not so bad as your vet said. Yes, weight is a huge factor with them...definitely keep any excess weight off of her! And, never walk her with a collar...always a harness! |
No, I'm not sure it's a collapsed trachea. The vet never said for sure what the exact problem was. Don't think he knew... But would a dog reverse sneeze every day? I could see if it was, like, once a week or so, but several times every day? I took a look at those videos and I guess it doesn't sound like any of them. It definitely is a goose honking, though. I originally thought it was reverse sneezing but then the frequency elevated. ???????? Edit: You know, I went back again and looked at the videos and it does seems to sound/look more like reverse sneezing. What's the deal with that then? Can you help that and why does it happen so often? |
Reverse sneezing is harmless. But, in saying that, if he is having more frequent episodes, there could be an underlying cause such as allergies. You can stop it by rubbing his throat slowly when it happens or by closing his nostrils for a few seconds. I was worried about Ruger, and the idea of a collapsed trachea came up. The vet said he could take an x-ray to diagnose it. If the x-ray was positive it would indicate CT, but he also said an x-ray may not show anything even if he had it. |
I took my baby to the vet this week she was diagnosed with reverse sneezing brought on by allergies and given Claratin. I have not seen a difference yet but it has only been two days. Best of luck to you with this as I know it is scary to see your baby have one of these episodes. |

My little Karlee has reverse sneezing about every other day. Usually it happens after eating too fast, and it always goes away fairly quickly. If I didn't know what it was from reading about it on YT, I would have totally panicked. I do hope she grows out of it as it is stressful on both of us. |

Maggie starts to honk when she gets excited. The tech at our vet office told us to push her nose towards her chest and this makes it stop. I take my finger and sort of wrap it over her nose and push/pull down towards or chest. She stops instantaneously. |
