How Much Food Is Too Much? I've always read that when you have a new puppy you should free feed them and I did that with our little boy who is now almost 1-yr. old. The girls are 13 weeks old and they are chow hounds. I am feeding them Blue Diamond Puppy Food for small breeds and they eat it like crazy. In fact they are eating about 3/4 cup a day. They are small puppies...Sophie weighs 2.1 lbs. and Sadie weighs 1.9 lbs. Should I back them off a little and limit their intake to 1/2 cup a day? |
I don't have specific knowledge of your kibble, but I'm pretty sure that 3/4 cup or more is too much for the size of your pups. |
My little Mia weighs 5 lbs and I feed her 3/4 cup a day split into three meals. She chows down but doesn't seem to be looking for food inbetween meals. I do give her small treats. |
it all depends on how active the little ones are....i see it like this...if they are active i would free fee...i would rather have them have a little more belly then usual in case for whatever reason they get one of those upset tummy and don't eat....at least they won't go down so quick...you know what i mean...because sometimes they stop eating due to not feeling good...and then so does their health and weight...they are still young....and i don't see what's wrong with free feeding them....as they get older they won't eat as much....probably because they won't be burning as much energy...i still free feed mine now..and they eat when they want which isn't even much... |
Most manufacturers have feeding charts at their Web sites. I was told to use the chart but feed a little less, as the food companies want to sell you more food. You can just leave the food out, but if you are trying to housebreak your dog leaving food out all the time makes it tough to keep your dog on any kind of "poop" schedule. |
3/4 cup sounds like a lot for ones so little, but I'm not familiar w/your brand. It's possible your older one is teaching the little one to compete. If that's what's happening you will want to watch them, as eating too much too fast will cause choking. That can happen easily when there's more than one dog. Many young yorkie pups only nibble all day long. Roxy has only eaten 1/2 cup a day most of her life & her weight is good. She occasionally has days of wanting a little more. She was 3.2 lbs at 11 weeks old & now just over 8 lbs. |
