Best Food Option for Pup with History of HGE About 2 months ago Maddy had to be hospitalized overnight due to having HGE (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis). She is doing great now, and they mainly had to restore fluids lost from excessive diarrhea, but now I am at a loss of what to do about her diet. Prior to the HGE, she was on Raw. My vet suggested that I give her Royal Canin HE Intestinal 28 (INTESTINAL HE | Royal Canin Veterinary Diet). Well, I followed the vets orders for the past two months, and she has done pretty well on the Royal Canin. My concerns with the RC, is the amount of food that they say she should eat daily... with the higher amounts of food, it makes me think that the food is a lower quality food. I checked the dog food analysis site, and it is a 2 star food. Not exactly ideal. She grew up on Innova and then transitioned to the raw. What would you suggest to feed her, taking into consideration her "digestion/intestinal" issues? I want her to have a high quality, premium food, but want it to be easy for her to digest. Thoughts? Suggestions? I really appreciate your help! |
Nature's Recipe brand claims their foods are easily digestible. Mine eat the Vegetarian formula, and their venison formula. I wasn't aware that anyone had discovered what causes HGE, other than stress can bring it on. My pup had it 3 times, but no diet recommendations were made, other than Hill's I/D for the first week home, then back to his regular food. I add coconut oil or milk, salmon oil, and Probiotics w/prebiotics and enzymes to all my pups food. So far, no problems to report. They all appear to be very active, and get hungry before the second meal of the day, and they've been cleaning their bowls very well. Before adding the supplements, I was tossing out alot of their breakfast and dinner. I think the Probiotics have helped their digestion immensely, their bodies are getting more out of the food they're eating, as it supplies the good bacteria neccessary for proper digestion, and keeps the bad bacteria at bay. Coconut oil/milk supplies medium-chain fatty acids, is a natural antibiotic, fungiside, good for skin and coat, salmon oil supplies omega 3's and 6's fatty acids good for heart, brain, and intestines, is a natural anti- inflammatory, good for arthritis, skin disorders, plus too many to list here! Hope this helps! |
