Yorkie Snorts? I am concerned. Sadie has been like snorting alot. Not sure if that is how you would decribe it. Sounds like a sneeze and cough all at once. In addition, yesterday she acted like she was choking. Most likely more like hiccups, but her whole throat moved like choking. Do dogs get hairballs???? Her "snorts" isn't just an occasional snort..it would be several at once, then she stops. Not sure if I should have her checked out or if this is a usual thing for dog. What should I do? |
Sounds like it could be inverted (or reverse) sneezing which is completely normal. Here's what is sounds like However, I remember seeing something on Dogs 101 about Yorkies that they someones make a goose-like sound (can't remember what they called it) and that's normal too. I've never heard Tobie do this one though. |
Roxie snorts a lot too...mostly when we go out for walks. I call her my little piggy because that's what she sounds like! |
reverse sneezing is normal for yorkies. BUT they also can be prone to collapsed trachea which sounds similar if you don't know what to hear for. It is a dangerous condition where the trachea is no longer an "O" shape, but more like a crescent moon shape and restricts the breathing. The struggle for air causing the trachea to close up even more (like when you suck on a straw that's been smashed). let me see if I can find some more info and paste it in here. |

That video made me so sad... Olive does the reverse sneeze and sometimes what sounds like hyperventilating but only for a very brief time, and not very often. I hope she's not having trachea issues! She seems ok for the most part, but the hyperventilating scares me. Does anyone else have experience with this, too? |

Are you using a collar or harness? |
I have five yorkies and three of them have inverted sneeze (my Vet says). Because of the similarity of the sound of the sneeze (cough) and the collapsed trachea, I continue to worry. He keeps assuring me that it sounds worse than it is. But, I monitor my babies closely and keep worrying about it. |
With Collaped Trachea, a slight pressure on the front of the throat will very often cause a dog with CT to cough, but will not start a series of reverse sneezes. |
Paris has collapsing trachea. It has no cure, get your pup checked out for a good diagnosis. |
