DHPP shot? Apple had her annual booster DHPP shot, yesterday, and she sure isn't herself, this morning...She ate, but then went right into her heated puffball bed...She normally beats up Buzz, and chases him through the house for at least an hr., after breakfast...Is this normal, after a DHPP shot? I don't remember her doing this w/first 3 in her puppyhood days? She seems to be shivering, just a tiny bit, and I think this indicates pain? I will call the vet, when they open, but would like to know something now, of course... |
Hi Maggie, So sorry little Apple is not feeling herself. Calling is the Vet is probably a good idea, however I really do not think it is anything to worry about. Usually when they have a reaction to the shot it is within 20 min of getting the shot. I would think that it is more about her being sore around where she got the shot. Because you feel she is shaking and she did not eat a lot I would check her gums to make sure they are nice and pink. Also if you want try to entice her with some of her really favorite foods (cheese, peanut putter) to see if she is responsive to them. Please let us know what the Vet says |
Hi Cheryl...thanks for your post...you always have a nice word of encouragement...Apple is eating just fine, but she's just not being her naughty little self lol...The vet did mention she might be a little sore, today...Little Buzzy Boy just had a parvo booster, and doesn't seem to be bothered, at all...He's probably glad for the break...lol...His dream is to be a little roly poly couch potato, but Apple won't allow it...I'm glad you mentioned about the usual 20 minute reaction thingy...I thought about that, too, but was glad to see it from another person...Hope you and your little Milo are doing well... |
I have had three pups this year that had issues after that shot. Not really what you would call a reaction but it really made them uncomfortable. They actually screamed as if they were in pain when I even tried to touch them. The first one it happened to frightened me. In all three, it stopped in 24 hours. I would call the vet, but I am sure she will be fine by the end of today. I told the vet that I swear something is different with those shots. She is using the same company she always has, so it has to be with the manufacturer. Maybe nothing awful, but still something that clearly bothers them. I never had any carry on like that in the past. Thank goodness the recommendation is now every three years! I hate to see them uncomfortable like that. |
I think the shot reaction to vaccines varies from dog to dog. I decided not to give Toby the DH2PP shot this year since I feel his little body is still recovering from the HGE he had back in July 2009. I did give him the rabies shot and a bordetella shot and he was absolutely fine. My maltese Buffy, had a huge knot on her thigh where she had the rabies shot but went away with time. Next time I gave her the rabies, she did not get a knot. But when in doubt do call your bet. I am sure if you describe the symptoms, he will either tell you to watch for additional signs of reaction or bring your fluff in. |

I am glad to hear she told you that! I also think that giving Benadryl prior is a good thing. She is really such a great vet! At least now Apple is done for three years now! :) |
Yep, and when we do rabies, I'm doing the benadry thing, again...She sure is the best vet on the planet...I never thought I'd find another one I liked as much, as Dr. Wilson, before he retired...I was w/him for 30 years...I, already, like her as much, if not more...And it only took me 3 vets, before I found her...lol...Well, you found her, I just started using her :D |

But...yes, she is great. I have used her since 2001 and she has never misdiagnosed any of my pups...and she has seen many with various conditions. |
