My Yorkie's baby teeth don't seem to be falling out like they should My female Yorkie (Taylor) is now 6 months old and her incisor teeth fell out as they should have and were replaced with her adult teeth. The rest of her teeth have started to come through as well, but the baby teeth aren't completely loose and some are not loose at all and she has a double row of teeth like a shark! One or 2 have fallen out so I don't want to panic just yet, but im worried that the space in her mouth is going to be cramped and lead to other problems. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, will it rectify itself and should I just give it a few more weeks before rushing her off to the vet for a very expensive visit? I did some research regarding this and they all said that if they dont fall out as they should then they should be removed. I am keeping a daily check on them. Any experiences and advise will be welcome please! |
this is normal in the yorkie breed...most have to get the retained baby teeth pulled out when they get spay and neuter |
You say it's normal? All my previous dogs over the years I have never even noticed their adult teeth come through because it happens so naturally. I find it very odd that she has double sets of teeth and that the old ones aren't even loose! but thanks, I will keep an eye on it and see how she goes :) |
My little guy didn't lose his baby teeth. when he was neutered at 6 1/2 to 7 months old, he had to have 13 baby teeth pulled. Didn't seem to affect him at all, he still ate his food. |
I thought my little one was going to have the same problem with her teeth. I kept a Himalayan Chew or a Bully Stick in front of her to chew on when I was home to watch her, and sure enough it helped her to work them loose. She lost most of them at once. I don't know if that would be of any benefit to yours now since adult teeth are coming in, but it might be worth a try if you do not already offer her chew toys or treats. |
Yes quite normal with the Yorkie breed. I find mine lose all of theirs by 12-14 months old. |
Yes, it is normal with yorkies.... Chloe and Dylan were spayed/neutered last week and Chloe had 10 teeth and Dylan 4 teeth removed. :) |
I always give her plenty of things to chew on - I have given her a cow hoof now because it is rock hard and I'm hoping it helps. Thanks for your advise, maybe I should try a toffee! ha ha! It just worries me that they aren't even slightly loose. Like I said, her incissors fell out so easily and now she has 2 canines next toe ach other and others have grown underneath so hopefully they will push the baby ones out. I'm not having her spayed just yet and wanted to let her have a litter when she's 2 years old so if they don't fall out on their own I guess she will have to visit the vet. |
I'm so happy to hear that it took 12-14 months for teeth to fall out. Gio canine are double and I wasen't sure if I should have them pulled. I guess I will wait a little longer. |
How old is Gio now? I'm also going to try and not panic just yet! It seems to be a common trait in Yorkies. Taylor is only 6 months so I will give it some more time I think. |
When I got my now 4yr old Duncan a good friend and owner of 7 yorkies told me to play with Duncan with those rope toys and to wiggle it to loosen up the baby teeth so I did. When I got him fixed I told them to pull out any baby teeth and to my surprise he didn't have any, not one.... I did the same with my next two boys and only one has one that I can see but will find out for sure later this year. |
I bought her a new special plaited rope today which is nice and big and I know she will just love and hopefully she will just work them all out on her own :) I hope so! |
Hope Taylor's baby teeth fall out soon - she's still quite young. My yorkie, Poppy is now 18 months and about 6 months ago the vet told me that some of her baby teeth were not falling out as they should and that this was a common problem with yorkies. It cost approx. £80 to have them removed and she's now fine. Hope Taylor's baby teeth are sorted soon. Good Luck! |

Apple had her two canine upper teeth removed at 12 months old, when she was spayed...The vet said she doubted if they would have every come out, as the root on the tooth was a little over 2 1/2 times the size of the tooth...My little boy, Buzz, has one upper canine baby tooth still in, (almost 8 months old) so I'm giving it another 4 months, then it'll have to come out... |
