can liver shunt occur at any age I was just reading a thread on Liver Shunt Disease. My little guy was tested at 7 months when he went to be neutered. All the blood work came back o.k. However do they need testing throughout their lives. If so how often? If he tested o.k. can he still get this at a later date, when he is older? This is pretty scary & I would really like to find the answers to these questions if anyone has any info. Thanks |
This should answer your question: Shunts can be either congenital--a condition the animal was born with--or acquired--a condition that developed later in life. Congenital shunts are generally diagnosed in animals less than one year old. Acquired shunts can occur at any age and are often caused by liver disease. Refer to this link: Yorkshire Terriers: Health issues in Yorkies Breeders should be aware of. |
Hmmm, good question. From what I have read, ....Most animals with congenital portosystemic shunts show clinical signs before 6 months of age. Where signs are subtle, the condition may not be diagnosed until much later. I found this ... portosystemic shunt Hopefully others will share their experience to put you at ease. |
thank you for the info...I will read up on this. Now I need to find out what could be the cause of liver disease in an older yorkie. Maybe if I do my best to take great care of him (which I am of course trying to do, that's why I joined YT afterall) I can keep him from getting this. Thanks again. |

So, do your research so you're an informed "parent", but don't panic and look for things that aren't there. |

Don't fret, he's o.k...I remember worrying about every little thing, when Apple was about 3-6 months old...Another YT member on here told me to stop worrying and enjoy each day w/my Apple, and deal w/things if and when they came...I took her advice, and 10 months later, Apple is doing fine...I'm so glad I learned to do this, because when Buzz came along, the whole experience was so much better...I would think, at 7 months, you pretty much have a healthy pup...Of course things can go wrong, but more often than not, they don't...So try to relax and enjoy each day, not looking for anything to be wrong, and before you know it, you'll wake up one day and think "wow, I've got a really healthy pup" :D |
