My puppy refuses to eat dry food? HELP!!! I just bought a 13 week old yorkie/maltese mix. She is 13 weeks and 1.10 ounces. Breeder had her on wet food 3 tiimes daily and dry food just to niblle on. I took her home and have tried everything possible to make her eat the kibbles. Have bought like 4 bags already of high end kibbles and she wont eat it. I have tried mixing the wet food with the kiblle, wetting the kibble to make it softer etc. I even tried just leaving her with the kibbles for a whole day but her sugar level dropped that nught cause she refused to eat that whole day. I later fed her the wet food and she was fine. I am now feeding her wet food 2 times a day and leaving the dry food out for her to nibble and but she wont touch it. Vet says she has her teeth and theres no reason she shouldnt be eating kibbles. Can someone tell me if theres a food out there that is dry kibbles but really soft for puppies that smells like wet food? What should i do, i dont want to keep feeding her wet food but dont want her sugar level to drop from not eating. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!! |
do she have all her teeth? also i would get some nutrl-cal and keep on hand just in case her sugar level drops again. how big are the kibbles? try breaking them up to smaller pieces if possible...what are you feeding her? |
When I bring home a new puppy I always worry about them eating too, so to make sure they take off good on their food, I mix a tsp of plain yogurt on top of their food and I have never had any problems getting them switched over this way. Good luck. |
Well, i am feeding her ceasars puppy food. As for kibbles, i have Blue, Royal canin baby food, Purina Pro Plan, and Nutro. None of them she likes at all. She does have her teeth in. She bites on my hand all the time and i have felt them and even the vet told me she should be able to chew them but she just doesnt like it because its hard. I tried mixing the wet food with the kibbles and all she did was lick the top of the food. If she got a kibble in her mouth shed spit it out. Ughhh???? I will try mixing yogurt in her kibbles but have a feeling shell just lick it and wont chew on kibbles. Is there a type of food youd recommend as far as kibbles that are really soft? |
I had this problem before and I used kibbles & bits. I know that it is not a good food but she would actually pick out a few of the pieces to eat. I was at the point that 'any' food was better then the problems we had with her blood sugar. We did that for about a month then she switched over to her regular food (natural Balance) with no problems. I also ground up the kibble really small to mix in with the wet. It was too small for her to spit out. |
I make really small meatballs with one kibble wrapped inside wet food. This is a little time consuming but I know that with every bite she is eating a kibble. Best to you - I know how this is can be. |
Have you tried mixing water into her kibble to soften it up? |

well what do you know,,, i bought a small 3 dollar bag of Purina Puppy Chow and that little turd loved it. She ate like 10 or 15 kibbles. What do you all think? Should i completely stop the wet food and just give her that? I also noticed this morning she pooped and it stunk really bad. I woke up late to take her out she she pooped in the small bathroom she sleeps in. Ughhh, it has never stunk like that before and also she never poopes too much and there was alot of poop this morning. Could it be that food? Should i just keep her on this food and take away the wet food completely or should i still feed her 2 times daily of wet food and leave the puppy chow oout for her at all times? Also, when can i start making her eat a better quality dry food? When should i stop worrying about her blood sugar going down so i can just put out the dry food and not have to worry about feeding her the wet food? |
There are very few fans of Purina Puppy Chow, on this forum! It appeals to the pup because of the smell, but if you look at the ingredient list.... That is likely, though, why she had plentiful, stinky poop! She is quite small, and it will be awhile before you DON'T need to worry about her blood sugar. Question.. How much canned food do you give her at each feeding? And how long does it take her to eat it? She may not be hungry... I would think, by her size, she should be eating more than twice a day! What dry food was the breeder giving? She is a little old  for Royal Canin baby, in my opinion Don't stop the wet food, yet!! Please! She needs the nutrition, I am not sure of the quality of Ceasar, but I am sure the Purina won't fulfill her needs! |

Hi, yes it is the food. I'm happy that she is eating but I have to say that is not a good commercial food choice. It contains too much processed fillers and chemicals. Her stool will continue to stink and she will go more with it. There is a health and diet thread section on YT and you will see a lot of post about better choices and food delimmas. I can't recommend a kibble because I home cook for Cerise but I do recommend that you go to that section and read up on the food threads. Good luck with your new baby! |
Okay I'm going NUTS this is in the health and diet section...LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!! :lol tearsI need some coffee! |
She eats ceasar wet food 2 times a day. Shell eat one can in 3 feedings. This is what the breeder had her on. She also had her on the puppy chow which i refused to give her because i know its not a good quality food. I just bought it yeasturday because i was desperately trying to make her eat dry food. I really have tried everything and dont want to keep wasting money on dry food if she wont eat it. Should i just keep her on the puupy chow till she gets older and then change her food? Do you all think i should keep giving her the wet food if she does eat the puppy chow? She is pretty small but a very happy go lucky girl. I dont know what to do. |

Can you return the ones she doesn't like and get a refund? Some stores will let you, or even exchange it. Sometimes it's a trial period with food. |
Could you choose the quality kibble you want her on and then mix it with the puppy chow. Then over time cut back on the puppy chow. Just an idea. |
