Paw chewing/Allergies? Hi, Within the past few months, my dog has started chewing on his paws. He never used to do this.... I've checked for fleas, tics, splinters, etc and haven't seen anything but redness from where he is biting. A few months ago, I got his hair cut extremely short. It has since grown back. Perhaps it has to do with this? The vet said that it could be that Rico is suffering from allergies (such as pollen), and that the paw chewing is his way of expressing it. Has anyone else heard of this? The vet suggested giving Rico Childrens' Benadryl 3x/day, but I think that will make him too groggy. Any ideas or suggestions? |
Buddy (my yorkie) has the same issue, I give him benadryl as soon as he starts and just keep an eye on him for about 30min until the benadryl kicks in, I also spray bitter apple spray on his paw so when he begins to lick at his paw he doesn't like the taste and will stop. Hope this helps |
My mom's poodle does this to his paws when his allergies act up. She gives him the benadryl three times a day, but not the childrens. The vet goes by the weight of the animal as to the dosage.. His seems to be food allergies as my mom loves to treat him to people food....He has has to have shots for his allergies, this was in the summer when he was so bad.. DeeDee is so hyper the benadryl calms him down to were you would think he was really a good dog!!!!HAHA I wish you luck and hope it clears up on its own....Sharon |
just be aware benedryl can amp up a dog as well instead of sedating which happens to my dog. It could also be food allergy are you feeding anything with beef or chicken if so i would change the protein source for 12 weeks and try a limited ingredient diet like natural balance venison and sweet potato -12 weeks NO TREATS or anything but the kibble to do a true elimination diet |
Have you checked into his food? Sometimes licking the paws and allergies that show up in the skin can be due to an allergy to the grain in their food. Grain allergies are less common with grains such as rice rather than wheat which they can get alot of exposure to. |
