Rabies vaccine and insurance question...
 
So I have to take my new girl to the vet to get her rabies shot... can anyone tell me how much that costs? I did a thread a while ago about pet insurance, but does it cover stuff like this? Are they all "you pay up front then we reimburse you" type deals? My girl is 6 months old, how many more shots does she need? I don't want to go for broke at the vet, but I want to make sure I'm not ripped off by an insurance co. that doesn't cover anything and I'm paying out monthly fees! :confused:

Most pet insurance companies don't cover routine care (vaccines). Some offer riders that do. That rabies shot is about $20 (varies by vet office), then it will probably be about $10-$30 to license. And while I don't want to bring it up :(, treating an adverse reaction to any vaccine would add more $$$ on the bill.

At least it's not as much as I thought it would be... but what's up with the license? I'll just have to pray that she has no funny reactions to it, although you would think that a shot that is required by law, if it makes them worse, THEY should have to foot the bill for that!

The license fee varies by county.

"go for broke"? Are you serious? Is this a NEW pet?

Yes this is a new pet. And as I have never had a dog before, this is all new to me. I'm just trying to find out what will be better for me financially, for the long road of being a new mom to my Sasha and what's best for her... Hence the reason for all of the questions!

You can expect to pay between $200 and $375 yearly for routine care depending on the vet. This may be a bit lower if you decide against blood work and urinalyses when your Yorkie is younger. This does not include dentistry or spay/neuter. These are the things that most insurance plans don't cover at all though (without a rider).

Dentals with blood work are between $150 and $300 (usually). Homecare will hopefully replace the need for dentals (mostly anyway). Then extractions would be more, etc.

This is great, thanks so much for all the info! Yes, I asked the dentist how often I should brush her teetha and she said daily, I'm just wondering now if I should use the doggy brush thing that you put on your finger, or a kids toothbrush? Thankfully her wonderful breeder had all of her other shots and bloodwork done, as well as getting her spayed before I brought her home. Spread out through the year this doesn't sound so bad... :rolleyes::aimeeyork

Hoping that your pup is very healthy, but believe me, if something (or a few somethings) go wrong, it is very expensive.

I use a kid's toothbrush for Ellie.
Many YTers like the finger brush.
I've never tried it.
CET has some good toothpastes (the vanilla-mint kind smells like rootbeer floats).

Well she's perfect and healthy now, and I guess I'll just have to pray that she stays that way! I'm gonna go try and find that toothpaste, and I guess I'll try the finger brush as that's what the breeder sent me. Lol the way Sasha is going, it'll take her a month to get through her bag of food, all she does is nibble! I do hope she starts to eat more though!

I wasn't trying to be nag but when i see people ask or complain about the cost of a simple rabies vaccine it worries me. And you said you didn't want to "go for broke'. One simple vaccine cost me $20 dollars a year for 2 dogs.
So this is a new pet for you. congrats. But be well prepared for many costly visits to the vet in her lifetime.
One visit to the vet for Laynee's dental visit cost me 348 dollars. Then there's simple things like UTI's, spay/nueter, vaccine boosters, bloodwork,grooming, anal gland expressions, frontline, heartwom prevention, microchipping, etc. and if you add on the few people who have that ALONG with genetic testingfor breeding purposes, xrays, ultrasounds, antibiotics, special diet foods, whelping supplies, emergency csections, and the first 12weeks of care for an entire litter.....DOGS ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!
Sometimes i just wish people would put a little more thought in BEFORE getting a pet and then afterwards realizing just how much they depend on you financially. I absolutely love my dogs more than anything. and myhusband knows this. He knows i'd sell my kidneys just to make sure I had them by my side. They will love you for life but it takes time, work, patience, and YES MONEY.
And I personally HATE pet insurance. Most of them I think is a waste of money. They always have co-pays and most ONLY cover emergencies and NOT routine care so the monthly payment would be better saved in a savings account for you to have access. IMHO

i use these as dentists use chlorhexedine to keep bacteria down in mouth. I also use gauze around finger and use oxyfresh pet gel. I also have the cet tooth paste chicken flavor but tend to use the wipes more after learing from non-anesthetic hygeniest she uses this and swears by it

lol boy do i know the expense it adds up fast when they get sick and i had no clue getting my first dog and i think i am fairly intelligent but boy do i now know after having dogs with health issues

Well considering that this is my first pet (like I said) I was just inquiring about the cost. I did months of research before bringing her home and asked tons of questions on here. I love her to death already and want the best for her and I am not looking to get b**ched at because of it. If you would read back, I said the breeder took care of most all of her shots and spaying her... so I was simply inquiring about the cost of other needed shots and whether pet insurance was a good thing to have. I put tons of thought into getting this pet, which is why I'm 27 and she's the first pup I've ever had. Whatever care she needs she will get, with or without insurance. So, I was ASKING about cost, NOT COMPLAINING.
