Anyone else have a yorkie that eats way too fast? Sweet Pea is 1yr old and we have her on special wet food and Royal Canine small bites. We only give her small amounts of food every 4hrs (4x's per day) This is per her vet's advice. She is 4lbs 3 oz. She eats so fast that sometimes she almost chokes on her food. Is there something i can buy that will help her slow down?? |
Tobie doesn't eat his dog food fast but he practically swallows treats whole! It always worries me that he is going to choke. I think there are special bowls that you can buy that will make them have to slow down while eating. I know they have them for dogs that drink water too fast (like my Cocker Spaniel) but I think they work for food also. |
I found a couple of examples of bowls that will help her eat slower. Hope that helps! ![]() JW Pet Skid Stop Slow Feed Dog Food Bowl |
Lots of people have recommended bowls like this. ![]() |
Thanks everyone! |
Wow, I have this problem too, Sugar wouldn't munch, she just swallow the kibbles I give her, sometimes I put in some water, she eats slower this way :) |
Sometimes I fill Ruger's bowl and it sits there for hours, then I turn around and it's gone in a second. Usually he takes the bits out and eats them away from the bowl. |
I have this problem with our Maltese Lola. But her problem is with water. She gulps the water down so fast that she either throws up or chokes. We have tried several things so now I have to put like 1 ounce of water ever hour or so. Another thing that works ok is a Rabbit water bottle ,the kind they have to lick to get a few drops out of. Gen I like the idea of the eat slow bowl. |
I have one that *inhales* her food. I have tried everything from hand-feeding a few pieces at a time to the special bowls. Nothing worked for her. She also did this with water, as mentioned by Gen, I use a rabbit waterer in her crate and this has slowed her down somewhat. She still will gulp when she goes to the bowl. My fear is she is not digesting her food well. I have saw entire pieces of food pass in her poo because she does not chew. However, she is a big girl and growing so I guess I just have to deal. |
