Please help with baby teeth issue Hi, my yorkie's name is Mia and she is my first. She lost all her baby teeth except for one in the front. She is now 8 months and I am taking her to get spaid on Friday 26/02/2010. Should the vet pull it out? I dont want her to have to much pain. |
A retained baby tooth can cause trouble. I would have the vet pull it. She will be "out" anyway, and you will be snuggling her pain away, when she comes home. |
If it is loose I would wait. Zeus lost one of his baby teeth he had when he was close to a year. We still have one more to go and I wiggle it everyday. If it doesn't come out he will have to have it removed. |
Absolutely get it taken care of if she is already going to be under. You don't want to take the chance that it won't fall out on its own and then have to put her under anesthesia again. I had to get the upper canine teeth pulled on a dog many years ago as a solitary procedure (not in conjunction with any other surgery), and he never skipped a beat, it was like the procedure was nothing to him, and there were no pain meds. So I really think that the recovery that you need to concentrate will be her spay. She will be given pain meds for that, so the tooth being pulled will not be a pain issue in any event. |
Have it taken out when you take her in for her spay, while she is already out. Buster is over two years old and just had two baby teeth removed. The vet should have removed them when he got neutered almost two years ago. :mad: |
Yes have that tooth pulled, yorkies are one breed that have trouble losing all their teeth on their own, and it's very common to need several pulled. Do it when you have her spayed, and she won't feel a thing, otherwise you might need to do it later, and that means going under anesthesia again. |
It is highly recommended to have all retained baby teeth pulled at time of spay/neuter surgery. If not taken out, it can cause food particles to get stuck & that causes faster plaque build-up which leads to peridontal (gum) disease. I've seen pets as young as 3 losing their teeth & has peridontal disease, it's very sad. My vet recommends playing tug of war, we've had success w/that. Giving hard chews like bully sticks or himalayan chews are good. If it's loose, you can pull it out w/a wash cloth. Don't wiggle it, as that can cause pain. |
