Does anyone feed there babys raw chicken necks
 
Ive have been told bye our vet that i can give them raw chicken necks and that they wont harm them .does anyone feed these to there yorkies ?

Yeah, I read this too, and tried it, but I would not recommend it to anyone, Joey almost choked to death, I'm so mad at myself for reading something and thinking it sounded like a good idea. On a bigger breed dog it might be fine, but I don't recommend it for yorkies.

We used to do Greyhound rescue and there were a lot of people that fed raw turkey necks to them........ I know it took a little while for their tummies to get all the enzymes going. Just kind of yucky to see them eat:tongue036. The dogs loved them!

I only feed my yorkies cooked chicken and I give it to them in tiny pieces, I'd be too scared to feed them any raw meat:eek:

Yes. Necks on occaision...but mostly wings. A couple of mine LOVE them and do great with them. The biggest draw back for me is the mess they make eating it. So, I limit mine to this occaisional treat in the yard on nice days while we are grilling or doing yard work.

I feed mine whole chicken including the neck without problems. But I ALWAYS supervised any meal with bones in it.

We have never fed necks but we do feed chicken backs, wings, thighs, drumsticks....etc. As with ChantalB, all bone meals at our house are supervised!

good to know my friend feeds these to her two 4lb maltese all the time and chicken feet too - she feeds only raw to her little ones and they are real healthy - she gets the chicken necks from whole foods i believe -

Nancy, just curious -- why would something that was a choking hazard for a small dog not be a choking hazard for a big dog? How exactly did the neck cause choking? Sorry, I've just never even seen a chicken neck so I'm having trouble visualizing what they look like.

I want to try these but I definitely don't want to run into any choking problems!

I guess, the chicken neck was not that much smaller than his own neck, Lol, I'm surprised you never have seen a chicken neck, they are fairly round in diameter, and he tried to swallow the whole thing, and started hacking, I had to pull the neck from his throat. Maybe other dogs chew it, but Joey didn't seem to chew it that much. A larger dog would have no problem, because they have a much larger esophagus. I should add, I didn't cut the neck up, I gave it to him whole. I don't know if this would make a difference, but there is no way, I'd ever try it again.

I see. Franklin is a gulper too so I would definitely have to supervise him if I ever gave him one. The general rule with raw feeders is to feed BIG to avoid any potential problems with choking. If you ever wanted to give the same recreational/dental benefits of a raw meaty bone you could give a chicken drumstick or pork ribs. I guess I didn't realize chicken necks were so small.

I guess it varies, it was probably a 4-5 pound chicken, and Joey weighs 5 1/2 pounds, if he were smaller, he might have not tried to swallow it whole. A chicken neck bends, it's not like the straight bone of a chicken leg.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this.
There are probably so many cases like this and people just don't write about it. Of course there is a choking hazard with just about everything, but IMO, there is a much higher risk with something like this. People really do need to see things like this before deciding to feed raw (just like they need to understand that an unbalanced homecooked diet could lead to very serious health issues)...

I have to agree - I've never given mine anything raw - or bones of any kind..I'm to afraid to. With UNcooked chicken bones I know they aren't susposed to splinter ....but they're still a hard object and can cause choking - these guys have tiny throats

I had read so many positive things about it, and Joey would run into the kitchen when I was cutting up a chicken, so I just decided to try it. I honestly could kick myself for doing this; it was so frightening. I think we need to understand all the pros AND cons when deciding a food, and sometimes we only hear the pros.
