My Dog is obsessed with eating grass! Arrrggggg! Reesie has always nibbled on the grass, ever since we got him. He is starting to do it more and more, and now it is causing him to puke. I know that some dogs do this 'cause their stomachs hurt, but Reesie has always done it. I think it is a habit, but it is now starting to be a problem. How do I get him to stop eating it? Does anyone else have this problem? |

don't know what to tell you on how to stop it though - you may have to try commands and watch him all the time till he breaks the habit |
I don't think the grass will hurt him unless it has been treated with lawn chemicals. I wonder if you could give him a bunch of cooked green beans to curb his habit? What if you planted some of your own grass in pots or maybe bean sprouts and let him munch on that? I've seen little pots of grass for sale at Pet Co. |
I have read in the past that this is really a training issue and you have to stop it when you see him doing it. Good luck!:) |
All three of mine munch a little on grass, but not so much they make themselves sick. I like to call them my little moo-cows. Anyway, they also love to eat lettuce (usually dropped from above while I'm chopping a salad) and LOVE green bell peppers, so usually I will give them a few healthy veggies while I'm preparing my own salads and it seems like they eat grass a little less. I have no idea if it works to keep them from eating grass or not, but it's worth a try. |
LOL just like a cat who goes crazy on catnip |
There are many reasons why a dogs eat grass. some vets thinks its just normal canine behavior, while others say they may be lacking something like fiber. some also say dogs eat grass when they have an upset stomach. Since grass is not very digestible, many dogs do vomit after eating it, some dogs just like the taste of grass. Mine always seem to eat on it when they have an upset stomach. I wouldnt be to worried unless your little one is acting sick. never let them eat grass that has been treated. and keep them away from where wild mushrooms are growing. |
Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm hoping this is a habit that we can break. He seems to be very stubborn about certain things when he sets his mind to do something. |
I always have heard if a dog eats grass, then their tummy's are bothering them. When I was the Vet about this recently, they told me that the blades of grass can cut their stomach's since it is sharp. You should somehow keep your dog away. |

Jackson had an upset stomach last week and I could tell he had to puke. So I let him outside and he started eating grass like CRAZY and made himself throw up. It helps them in that sense... he was smart enough to know that eating grass would make him throw up whatever was icky in his stomach. I do think some dogs just like to grass. Jackson used to do that, where he would eat grass just to eat it... and it never hurt him. He kind of stopped on his own though. |
