Bully Sticks question...
 
OK, so from posting all the new goodies I just got for my baby that will be arriving Tuesday, many of you told me to take the "Greenies" back to the store and get Bully Sticks instead, as the Greenies can aparently make them choke? I exchanged them yesterday, and the woman at Petsmart that was helping me said that I should take them away once my Sasha has chewed them down and they get small so she doesn't choke on them. Is this true? I know nothing about treats as this is my first dog, I didn't even know that they tear these bully sticks apart to eat. Do they digest OK? I'm just so worried, I'm going to go buy her some himilayan chews at a store near my house once she gets here, because I want to take her with me. Are those better, or the same? It just makes you want to give them the cheap, soft treats just because you know they won't choke on those... but I know they're not good for them or their teeth, and I want to give her the absolute best. Help! :eek:;)

You should definitely take chews away once they're small enough to fit into your baby's mouth because of choking hazard. Bully sticks are 100% digestable, and designed to be eaten. :)

I have an aggressive chewer -- what are the chances that he could break off a large piece of the bully stick?

Do you have bully sticks back in stock? :)

I completely agree. To the OP - I actually buy all my bully sticks from AMD's website (they don't have the strong smell a lot of others have). But, you can find good ones locally (Merricks and Moo brands, for example). Just be careful buying ones that aren't wrapped in plastic as they can be covered in harmful bacteria.

I have never heard of them breaking. As the stick is chewed, it becomes soft.
I do not have any back in stock yet, but I will let everybody know asap! :)

My Zoey is only 4 lbs. but she's a very aggressive chewer. I found she was tearing off long strips of the bullies and swallowing them down whole...like pieces of spaghetti. Everything is food to her. :rolleyes: I figured, well, they're digestible, so no biggie...though it did give me pause.

Wouldn't you know...one day, she came over to me at top speed, looking desperate and making a sort of whining sound. I stuck my finger back in her throat and felt just the tip of one of those strips that was NOT going down.

I couldn't get hold of it, so I pushed it back hard and felt it go in. She was happy and all was okay, except, of course, for my nervous system. Geez. :eek::eek::eek:

Needless to say, I'm scared of them now. I'm sure they're fine for a different type of chewer...but definitely not my little Zo. Too bad, too...she absolutely adored them. :(

Thank you for sharing -- this is my concern. Most dogs I'm sure are okay with them, but some are just nuts with what they are willing to try swallowing. Maybe I could try holding onto it while he chews.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of as well! I'm glad you were able to help her out though, and that you were around to do so! I guess I'll just have to wait untill I get her and watch what she does to them. What are the himilayan chews shaped like, and what are they made of?

Another thing you can do is buy a kong and stuff peanut butter into it then freeze it. It makes them work harder to get their treat. My Bella loved it when I use to give it to her.

Kongs are rubber and I'm sure would be great frozen with a goodie inside, for a teething puppy. I think you can buy them at just about any pet shop. My feed and grain store even carries them.

Zoey has just turned 2 years old. The best thing I've found for her is the Merrick "Doggie Wishbones". They're kind of a smoked beef achilles tendon. ($2.99 ea.) They don't stink, and they last a long time. (Smell sorta like a smokey Bar-b-que.) She has been unable to get any pieces off, no matter how hard she tries... ;) They sort of shred and end up looking a lot like a gazillion bits of dental floss, lol. Gross looking, but I couldn't care less, as long as she's in love. :D

She'll chew on one for about 2 weeks, then loses interest when that smokey flavor disappears.

She liked the Himalayan chew for a while then lost interest. I got her an antler...she'll give it a go once and a while.

Still looking for the perfect chew.... :D
