Is shedding normal? Bilbo has straight, thick shiny hair. He seems to be healthy--his eyes are bright, he plays constantly, and has a healthy appetite (especially for paper and stuffed toys!) But he is shedding quite a bit. He is losing maybe 15-20 hairs every night when I brush him, and the bathtub is full of hairs after bathtime. So is this normal? He doesn't have any bald spots or anything like that. If it's not normal, are there adjustments I can make to his diet that would help him keep his hair? I know this is silly, but I am concerned. |
I do not think it is normal. Yorkies do not have an undercoat so they should not be shedding. I am hoping someone else can add to this, because I am not entirely sure. |
I can only talk for silky terriers, like yorkies they don't have an under coat, and like human hair, we do loose a number ammount of hairs a day, is not like normal dogs with an undercoat shadding but yes some hair loss is normal, I see it when I brush my dogs every day, NOT a lot but a little hairs do stay in the hair brush. hugs, Carmen in nj |
It's not silly :). It might be excessive...does the overall appearance of the coat seem like it's thinning? (I know that can be tough to tell sometimes) How old is this kiddo? Nothing else going on like excess thirst/peeing, lethargy, ear issues, skin issues etc...nothing else that's different/new? |
Since Bilbo is my first Yorkie, I don't know what is normal, but the amount of coat he has is about the same as it's always been. He hasn't been acting any different than normal (other than maybe some cabin fever) and the only difference I can tell in his health is that he seems to be scratching more than he usually does, although not excessively, and I assumed that was because of the drier winter weather. He doesn't have any rashes, hives, skin discoloration, or anything of that sort. He's eleven months old, and his hair is really slow growing. I was feeding him Merrick's Puppy Plate, but the store was out and I had to buy Iam's, and I'm thinking that might be part of the problem. |
How are the pollens in your zip code right now? You might want to check www.pollen.com |
Mine lose alot of hair...but I have 4, so it seems like they're shedding lol. I think it's like people, how we lose hundreds of hair strands a day. This is from wiki: Dogs shed their fur twice a year, in the spring and fall, or more often, depending on breed, living environment, and temperature. |
We are having a dust storm right now, but the pollens are in the high to moderate range. We might be getting some precip later this evening. I just want Bilbo to have a long pretty coat, and we aren't getting there yet. His hair is only about 1/4 of the way between his belly and the ground, and I for sure don't want him losing it before it grows out! |
My Jada has more hair in the brush right now than she normally does. I think it may be from the dry winter heat in the house. Plus I think she takes after me I shed worse in the winter too.:D |
What brush are you using? Maybe that is the problem. I used to think a brush was a brush was a brush. I was using a comb to get the tiny mats out, but also using it all over. It was doing more harm than good, causing me the break the hairs off with the comb. I have since been using a Madan brush from mimimomo and it is THE BEST! Hardly any hair breaks off and it's really soft and gentle on the hair. Uni thinks she is getting the spa treatment when I brush her! |
I hadn't thought about the brush--that could be it. |
