Food Questions We have just added a new member to our family! Our new Yorkie, Yankee, is joined at home by our 7 year old lab mix. They get along great! My question is, is there a kind of dog food that would work well for both of them? It is going to be next to impossible to have 2 food dishes! Has anyone ever had this problem? Please help!! |
I am right there with ya! We have a yorkie and a 7yr old beagle mix. We tried the two bowls at first but the Yorkie would eat out of the other dogs bowl! He hated having his own bowl. So honestly we settled on a food that would work for both of them. I am not sure what the other people here would say as I am sure there is some sort of special food you can buy just for Yorkies but we don't do that. Just to complicated especially because they are going to eat each others food anyway. We have always been Purina One lamb and rice people. The food pieces are very small so they are easy for the Yorkie to eat and Stedman likes them to. The Yorkie still eats only when he wants...as does the bigger dog. We fill the bowl and they both eat what they want out of it. If they seem like they are still hungry we will put more in. We have no way to know how much they are actually eating but they are both a very health weight...not to fat and not to skinny! Now if we had a doggie who would just eat and eat as long as there was food in the bowl then that would be a different story. We have been and always will be open feeders. Good Luck! |
they do have "all stages" kibbles. I know Canidae makes one. I had the same problem when I brought Lillie home. I have 2 yorkies and the older of the 2 would eat the puppy food. I guess she thought the pup was getting something better! lol....I switched to canidae all stages and it worked out great! Now I give them Merricks grammys pot pie. |
We use "Natural Balance" it also is for all life stages (means it includes puppies and older dogs as well as in between) It is a very good food also. That is what I would do pick out one that is for "all life stages" and go with that.Just pick out a smaller size, not the larger pieces.Or crunch up the larger pieces for the baby. |
I am a big fan of Merrick's. They have a great selection and even sell small 1lb bags for $1.99 for you to try out. All there food is for all stages and has very good reviews. They make amazing treats and the price difference is not much compared to the other brands. |
I let all 3 of my dogs eat out of the same bowl. We homecook, but I do leave kibble out at all times. I have been very happy using Petcurean's "Go Natural Grain-Free". Dog Food Reviews - Go Natural Grain Free Endurance - Powered by ReviewPost |
Grain-free kibble isn't recommened for puppies - too much protein. I have two dogs that eat from the same bowl and I feed them Evanger's Pheasant and Brown Rice. They like it and do well on it. One of mine has an allergy to chicken so we had to chose something that was chicken-free. The kibble is small, too so they can pick it up easily. They offer free samples, too. It is an all life stages formula as well. When I was looking for a good all life stages formula, I tried to get as many samples as I could before choosing one. Some high quality brands that offered me samples were: Evanger's Natural Balance Wellness Innova Sold Gold When you are looknig at all the different varieties, remember that just because a kibble is labeled as "puppy" or "adult" doesn't meant it is strictly for that age group. Always check the back of the bag (or website) for the AFFCO statement. If it is an all life stages food then it will say so - or if it is just for puppies or adults. I know Innova has a puppy and adult formula that are both ALS. They only use those labels for marketing. Good luck finding the right kibble. |
Thanks everone for yor help! I'm shocked with all the answers so fast!! Looks like I have found a place to turn to when I have questions with our new baby!!! |
My dogs each eat the same food, from their own bowl. With the exception of the puppy, same food, but the puppy one. I use Horizon Complete, for the lab, shepherd, and the yorkies! It is Canadian made, and they dive into their bowls when I say "ok". It is natural, no junk, I am really happy with every ones, eyes, and coats. |

Max (2 years) and Mickey (6 months) eat Nature's Variety Prairie line of foods. Their favorite is Chicken & Brown Rice. They also like the Lamb & Oatmeal and Beef flavors. It is an All Life Stages food which is why I like it for my adult dog and puppy. I still have 2 food dishes. They just have the same food in them. |
