ShyAnne had dental work done
 

Our little ShyAnne had her teeth cleaned this morning. I hate it that they have to be anesthesized to have this work done!! Oh well! She came out of it just fine and is doing very well. The vet's dental hygienist said ShyAnne was absolutely perfect to work on and that it took her only 1/2 the time she expected it to!!

My older furbaby, Ginger, has to have hers done in about 6 mos. I will be able to take better care of their teeth now by brushing and using the gels b/c I can do everything better now. My probs with the MS symptoms have been taken care of since Oct 20/09 and I am out of the wheelchair!! I might even be able to walk with them a bit now if our Spring really has sprung and the winter roads are over and done with!! I am sure hoping so!!

Do any of you have any tricks to brushing these little ones' teeth? I did get shown how today and I hope that when I try myself it will go as well!! Ginger sat really good and let the lady put her fingers in her mouth and rub her gums and teeth! No fuss! Hoping ShyAnne will do the same for me tomorrow.

I'll be back to check to see if anyone has added anything and I will definitely post a thread for help IF need be!! Now that the teeth are clean I want to keep them that way.

It's Dental month for dogs so we were given a free bag of each Medi-Cal's Dental food and Hill's Prescription Diet "Small Bites". They are both about 3x larger than their regular Medi-Cal dry tidbit food so I don't know if ShyAnne will eat either one! She is so picky!! Even her treats have to be broken down to smaller sizes. I'm supposed to mix these new foods up with their regular food until we use the last of that one up. Then they will only have the 2 new foods together. See how it goes! They also get a bit of Medi-Cal's wet food every nite at suppertime. The dry food is left for free feeding all day.

Glad she is all done!! I use the finger dental gloves as it is easier to get in their small mouths. I can brush 2 of my girls teeth but one won't let me. My Pixie has to have her's done soon too!

they have chlorhexedine in them which kills bacteria and i do circular motion so it gets under the gum line

Patti: Thanks! I had those little finger gloves when we only had Ginger and she hated it when I tried to get in her mouth. She was almost OK with getting the front ones done but she shook her head and squirmed and carried on like crazy when I'd try to get in to the back ones!

sugarmamma: Thankyou for the thumbs up! I am having fun out of the house, as well as in it, once again and that makes me feel much better emotionally so then the better I do physically! I am going to start taking one pup at a time over to the mail box and back - which isn't too far to walk! Hope that works well!

dwerten: What a wonderful sounding idea!! Thanks for that link. I am going to see if anybody in Canada carries that product or something like it! I'll even check with our vet and groomer. They both carry lots of different products for dogs. The dental hygenist that worked on ShyAnne showed me how to do the brushing in a circular motion. I laughed b/c I said that taking care of their teeth sounds identical to how to clean our own teeth - other than flossing! :D

I started to clean their teeth on Friday by using the paste on my finger, as I was shown. She told me to do that for a few days before trying the brush. They are not cooperating very well!! But, I am getting some of the teeth done on both of these little stinkers and I think they will be OK once they get used to the stuff!! My oldest dtr suggested (laughing as she did) that I might have to try different toothpastes until I find one they really like - just like she had to do with her kids! :)
