Gross eye gook! Ok, so I wipe my babies eyes everyday with a warm washcloth, comb out the "eye boogies" , but the secretion that comes from the eyes is really smelly. It almost smells like throw up. Is this normal? Is there some product that is safe I can use? Help! |
I have heard of 2 products but I've not used either. Angel eyes and apple cider vinegar. With it being smelly, you may want to call the vet. Mine have that but it has never been stinky/smelly. Good luck. |
thanks for responding. I just called the vet and made an appointment for a culture. |
I put a tiny smear of petroleum jelly to stop the eye boogies sticking. Hugs Shirl x x |
Thats a good idea, Shirl. I use tha applecider vinegar and it cuts down on the amount tremendously! But we still get a few. |

never heard of a culture for this only the schirmer eye test for dry eye? the eye envy has colloidal silver in it which is natural and cuts down on bacteria just like in teeth the bacteria is stinky so any bacteria build up is stinky - i would get the eye envy and use spring bottled water not tap as i have a maltese and they get tear stains and mine does not yet alot of it is genetics and tear ducts that come into play |
Jackson has never really had bad eye gook (except when on a certain food) until last week and I'm thinking it's allergy/weather related... but anyways, I just put a bit of apple cider vinegar in his water today so we'll see if it works. :) |
There's a difference between the occasional eye booger or tears, and brown goopy eyes, Joey had really bad goopy eyes when we did a food change, they took a while to completely clear up, and I don't know if it was a food allergy or some type of contamination with the food and bacteria. Depending on what's causing it the treatment is different. Here's a good link on causes and cures, but I think a vet check is a good idea: Tear Staining: The Causes & Cures |

Interesting thread. My dog's face smells like eucaliptus. I know that may be spelled wrong, but her face really smells good! Both dogs have that eye problem, so I'm going to try the petroleum jelly to keep the gunk from sticking!:D |
I love YT! This is exactly what was wrong with our Finnigen. He is 5 1/2 and was rubbing his face for the last week. Scratching. We thought it might be a bug bite. Yesterday morning my son noticed he had rubbed it almost raw causing the fur to fall out. I knew it had to be more than just a mosquito bite so we researched on here, and figure out it must be yeast. When the Vet opened today (long weekend in Saskatchewan so yesterday was a Stat holiday) we took Finnigen in. The vet gave us antifungal drops, wipes, and pills for the next week. I am going to also start putting Apple Cider Vinegar in their water and be more diligent about cleaning up eye gunk. Thanks for sharing your post it helped us tremendously! |
