Adding more fiber to their diet can help keep the poop firm. Green beans and carrots are good for them.

On the average you can empty glands via the external method. Every once in awhile you have one that is a bit more difficult, so you need to go in internally to get them cleaned out. Most vets just automatically go the internal way....but, then I don't take them to the vet to have them expressed unless I'm not having success. If one isn't instructed on how to do this you can cause injury and have the anal glands burst on you.

the groomers do the external glands and the vets do the internal which chester has to have done every several months, a higher fiber diet will help solid gold has 4% while some are only 2-3 it can make a difference

Omg'sh, I hope what you say is true about the firm stool, and not having to do the anal thingy...Since Apple and Buzz are both on raw, they have very firm stools, so I'm hoping I don't EVER have to start having this little doozy done...I only saw one vet do it to a dachshund of mine, and oh my, I had to leave the room, it wasn't a pleasant odor :sickie:...I'd never heard of it, before then...

It sounds like his butt may be just itchy and it is his way of scratching it.

It could itch for several reasons. Is it at all possible that he picked up worms somewhere? Most likely it's not the case, but one of the possible reasons to consider...

So I'm glad it's not just me. My pup is 2 months 8 days and just scared the living daylights out of me. He's small (seller said teacup), he was scooting around my living room floor tracking poop and barking. Although he's been dewormed by the seller, I still examined his poop for worms. I didn't see any, so this still scared me.

Why don't you take some of his poop to the vet for fecalysis
