Teeth brushing Just started to brush Abby's teeth. OMG  What a trip that is. Can't say as she likes it one bit. Does anyone have any suggestions what might be the easiest way to do this. What works for you? Thanks in advance for your help. |
Both of my yorkie girls are very good about brushing their teeth. As puppies, I started brushing every night, but I went about it slowly. The first couple of times, I just let them lick the paste off of the toothbrush. Then after letting them do that for awhile, I'd gently squeak the toothbrush into their mouth and just let them kind of chew on it. Slowly, I'd start doing some brushing. I'd keep it short and sweet though. Gradually build up the length of time that you brush. Now, they both stand patiently and just let me brush. You really have to be calm, patient, and take it slow. It will be worth it to take your time. If you just stick the toothbrush in their mouth and start going at it, they are likely to resist. Make it seem kind of like they are leading the brushing, but you stop when you're done, not them. Otherwise, they will learn that squirming gets them out of the brushing. Good Luck! |
I never had any luck finding a toothbrush small enough for Baileys little mouth, so I wrap a thin cloth around my finger and use that to brush his teeth, so much easier for me! Good luck :) |
For a super-tiny toothbrush, buy one for a cat. :) I second Missy's advice. I took about a month to build up to actual brushing. Every night I would just brush one tooth and stop the second he wanted to, etc. Thor still doesn't love it. He tries to turn his head away, especially when I do the front. Overall, he's pretty relaxed, though. He stays in my lap and falls asleep after tooth brushing. Nail clipping, he's gone the second I finish. |
Oooohhh.............maybe THAT'S what's wrong. Maybe I need to take it a bit slower. I need to start all over again. Do ya' think I might have better luck by starting over or is it too late? I guess I'll give it a try. Thanks for the help!! |
I think you can just back up to where she's comfortable, and go from there. Maybe just hold the brush out for her and let her lick the toothpaste off first. Thor loves Beef - he didn't care much for the Chicken or Vanilla. Good luck! :) |
Taking it slow is exactly what I did and Lilee is pretty good about having her teeth brushed. It's never too late, so good luck! ;) |
I don't brush Ella's teeth. They are so white w/o brushing. I am afraid that it'll hurt her in the future. Like by getting gum disease or something. |
So... are you able to brush Abby's teeth? If yes... what method did you find to work for you both? |
I'm back with the same issue.:( Has anyone ever tried Dentastix? If so, do they work or help? |
Same dog?? Starting when they are a puppy is easy. If you are having problems dont try to get the whole mouth just a few seconds on one spot everyday. Just hit different spots. The Dentastix I have no experience with but I know regular chewing seem to help with teeth. But looking at the indigence. I\'m not sure I would want my dog getting all those extra calories from something not healthy??? Are they hard or just something they will eat quick? |
I\'ve never had a problem brushing Ian\'s teeth, and did so daily. When he had his dental, I had the sealant, Sanos, applied, and was told to not brush his teeth. The sealant lasts for six months, and can be reapplied after that with a mild sedative. So far, so good, but I miss brushing his teeth. I will put a little CET toothpaste on his brush and let him lick it to keep his breath minty fresh. |
My dog was not go for the tooth brushing at first, I try it and choose a time when my dog had a decent amount of exercise and relax, so he’s more inclined to sit still for the procedure. |
I use the soft finger brush on Princess Sophie and I\'m sure she likes the taste of the tooth paste more than the brushing but we just keep doing it and the teeth keep falling out. That\'s baby teeth! LOL |
I am going to try this slow method with Bella. I hope it will also work with brushing. Lol. She is SUCH a little drama queen! |
