Is There A Really Safe Raw Food? With the recent recall of NV chicken formula, I'm just sitting here, bumfuddled, wondering if there really is a raw food you can be, absolutely, comfortable with? Of course, I realize there are issues w/dry and canned, as well, but I'd like to hear from you other raw food feeders, and see what criteria really puts your mind at ease in choosing a particular brand of raw...Also, would you think if the NV chicken formula has issues, would the others ones be suspect, as well? Thanks for your input... |
I dont use this however I have heard pretty good reviews about it.. It is freeze dried , I did however try it and Laci did like it... Stella & Chewy's - Home |
Thanks for your response...I have used it, but it is sooooooooooooo expensive...If I could fit it in my budget, I would...I think they use some kind of a high pressure procedure, that actually squeezes all the air, along w/any bacteria out of the product, w/o changing the shape, size or texture of the original product...Probably an expensive procedure, beyond just producting the food... |
my friend just switched from stella and chewy's to this one she buys it on amazon and it comes on dried ice - she does alot of research and she likes that this is organic meat Paw Naturaw: Where to Purchase Amazon.com: paw naturaw |

I too was put off by the recent recall of Nature's Variety. That was the last straw for me after the denaturant issues! I have switched to Stella and Chewy's for my pre-mades now. They make a frozen as well as a freeze dried/dehydrated food. EACH batch is independently tested by a lab for e.coli and salmonella and the results are posted on their website. That was enough to make me switch. It could be a super clever marketing scheme? But it does make me feel safer. Stella & Chewy's - Test Results |
Honestly, when discussing commercial pet food companies, there never is a 100% guarantee that there won't be quality control issue or an accidental bad batch -- companies and particularly people aren't perfect and mistakes happen. Personally, I like to avoid this by preparing my own raw although recalls happen with human food too! I think the best you can do is do your research, ask the company questions, and pick one that you are comfortable with. I do keep some pre-made raw on hand and companies I use include Bravo and Primal. I would also use Stella and Chewy's and Paw Naturaw (this would probably be my number one pick) if I had local access to it. If recall issues arise in the future with these companies, I may reevaluate. I think that's how you have to approach it. You can only do what you feel is best, and 99% of the time, that's good enough. |
Primal Pet Foods: Wholesome Raw Food for Dogs and Cats i like the primal for allergy dogs as you can get a very basic grind with no ingredients and then just add veggies |
Oh wow, I just remembered...Was it primal, that you have to supplement with...I've tried several brands, and I think it was Bravo that requires supplements, not sure? Anyone? |

I like Stella and Chewy's too. I did have a foster who didnt tolerate it though so we were on Nature's Variety for awhile but since she had gone we have been back to Stellas. Beef is the favorite. I didnt hear about the recall on Natures Variety though and my pet store has a freezer full of it. Is it just chicken and is it a regional recall or nationwide. I should alert the owner. Maybe there is no chicken in the freezer - I dont know what flavors he has since we havent been using it but I know there is a lot of Natures Variety and there have been no recall signs up. That is really disturbing. |
This is what I feed my 4 and 1/2 and they love it. the customer service is amazing and they only make what they have orders for. The great thing I love is that it doesn't take up much space in the freezer. There are 2 kinds depending on how you want to feed your dogs. They have chicken , beef, and turkey. Mine weren't too fond of the turkey so i emailed them and asked for just chicken and beef and it was no problem. Natural, Raw Dog Food, Grain-free Dog Food - from Darwin?s Pet |

Dear Maggie, Thank you for emailing! The recall only extends to the raw chicken with best by of 11-10-10. This does not include the organic chicken. We only run one protein and batch each day and as part of HCCP program the equipment is torn down and cleaned thoroughly for the next run on the following day. Sincerely, Customer Service Nature's Variety www.naturesvariety.com |
thanks! I just emailed my pet store - and if I dont see a sign up on Monday when I go in...it will be the last time I purchase food from there. |
