Are Eggs OK for my yorkie?
 

All of the sudden, my yorkie (1 year old today) won't eat his food. I was feeding him Wellness kibble with a little of Wellness canned chicken in it and he gobbled it up. Last week he started getting fussy. I started to warm the chicken before mixing it in and he ate it ok. NOW the only thing he will eat is his kibble with scrambled eggs stirred in. 1 egg lasts 2-3 days feeding 2 times per day. Is this OK for him? Does anyone have any suggestions. If he were a bigger dog, I would let his skip a meal - he would eventually eat if he got hungry. But he is only 5 lbs and I'm afraid to do that with him so I think I am creating a monster. Scrambled eggs are ok.....I feed them to my nursing mothers, great source of calcium....I'm not sure on a daily basis though, I'd discuss it with your vet.

Eggs are fine.
The fat content in the yolks can be a concern for some dogs, but it should be okay. When in doubt, just use the white. :) You could also try low fat, low sodium cottage cheese, yogurt, sweet potato, etc.

Because egg in and of itself is not a balanced diet for a dog, you could just consider it a treat. However, problems can occur when unbalanced, homecooked food makes up maybe about 10% of a dog's diet. So I'd make sure that doesn't happen. One egg over three days doesn't sound like a problem to me.

My dog stopped eating her regular food when she was very small and I was afraid she would get hypoglycemic (she wouldn't eat the liquid they gave me in case she didn't eat nor would she take Karo)...so I scrambled an egg for her and gave her a very small amount on top of her regular food. Then someone told me the dog would get high cholesterol so I bought the liquid egg whites only (pure egg whites that you can pour out of a container).

I pour that into microwavable egg cup, cook it in the microwave for a minute, cut it up, and store it in plastic containers and feed her a very small amount each morning (when I say small, I mean less than a teaspoon) on top of her regular small bites and she seems to go for that and her regular food.

I asked my vet and she said she saw no problem with it at all, but you should ask your vet's opinion to ease your own mind.

p.s. sometimes I sprinkle (again a very small amount) of parmesan cheese (very insignificant amounts) ... she seems to smell it and begins to eat her regular food.

I also have a container that is filled with chicken breast that is cut up that I use...again, very small amounts along with her regular food because I don't want her to neglect that food. She is six months old now and seems okay (although she did have stomach issues after her spaying)...but as of today, she is back to her old self.

I note her coat is really coming in shiney and healthy looking.

And my vet also said that because my dog is almost five pounds, the chance of her getting hypoglycemic are less than they were at her 2.5 lbs weight...hope this helps.

i agree egg whites if doing alot as the yolk is very high in fat and the doctor freaked out when my grandma who had pancreatitis twice told him she was eating an egg every day he said NO EGG as they are high in fat and since this breed is prone to pancreatitis I would strongly recommend just using the egg whites which is the protein if doing long term.

Has your dog been bile acid tested since a picky eater?

Every two or three weeks mine get eggs and LOVE them (the gas is awful, but worth it for them i guess:p). Sometimes we put yogurt on their kibble and they def eat more (I do that when I know we're going to be particularly active that day...dog park, 4 mile walk, etc). People always say cottage cheese too!
