Changing Foods I am in the process of switching Roxie from Nutro Natural Choice to Innova EVO. I like that it's grain free. I am doing it gradually, but am still a little confused. I was giving her 1/2 cup of the Nutro for breakfast and a 1/2 cup for dinner. The EVO says to give 1/2 cup DAILY serving for her weight, which would be 1/4 for breakfast and a 1/4 cup for dinner. The pieces are much smaller, and I just keep thinking this is a *really* small amount of food. I just want to make sure she is getting enough food. Am I worrying over nothing? She seems to really like the EVO. |
How much does she weigh. 1 cup seems like a lot for one day. |
She was 6.7 pounds at her last vet visit. |

I have just been going by the chart on the bag. The bag for the Nutro said 1/2 - 3/4 cup daily. I now see that the bag for the EVO states that less food is required due to the fact that it is more nutrient-dense. |
I used 1/2 cup a day with Max when he was on EVO. He was 6 1/2 pounds. It was plenty for him. |
Usually the feeding amounts on the food bag is just a guideline. You need to go by what's best for your little one. Sasha is just over 8lbs and she only gets 1/4 cup total for the day (1/8 cup twice a day) but both her meals I add a forkful of homecooked and she also gets a little bit of cottage cheese in the afternoon as a mid-day snack. Also, with the higher protein grainfree foods, normally you end up feeding a bit less like you said because there's more protein and nutrients. |
I would stick to what was stated on the directions and increase/decrease according to her activity level. |
Some foods have better quality ingredients too. Like a chicken meal protien has the water content removed prior to being added so they don't necessarily need to eat as much when there is better quality ingredients that the body can process more efficiently. Definately go by what the bag says and watch for changes in weight or activity levels. |
