After Spaying My vet sent shelby home with sedatives to give her if she is too active during the next week. I hate to give her this stuff but she is back to being a crazy dog 3 days after spaying. I am limiting her running area (ex pen) and I don't let her jump on/off furniture. Do/did any of you have experience with this? The vet is concerned about her developing a hernia in her scar area? |
When Cowboy was neutered they had me keep him in his crate for 7 days. He had to have a small incision made into the abdominal wall to remove one of his testicles. One had not descended that may be why they didn't want him to be active. I don't know. The only time he was allowed out was to go potty and to eat. He was wild the second day home. He wanted to run and jump everywhere. It was hard for me to keep him in the crate but I was worried that he would hurt himself. He did fine and is all healed now. But we did not use any meds on him. |
I personally would not use the sedatives. Ruby got spayed a few weeks ago and she was pretty much back to herself by day 4. I took Ruby outside on a leash for bathroom breaks and took her right inside after. I didn't let her have free time outside at all until about a 1 1/2 weeks after her sergury. Inside i let her play only in my bedroom for 1 1/2 weeks so she couldn't run around very much. That seemed to work for her and me. Good luck. |
I was a wreck when Gracie was spayed!!!!!!!!! By day 2 she was back to her banshee self so I had to limit her movement to one room, keep her on a VERY short leash while going potty(and right back inside, no play), and tried to keep the activity level down in general for the whole household to keep her as calm as possible. Trying to keep her from jumping on the sofa was the hardest thing of all!!!!!!!!!! I finally put a bunch of boxes on the sofa to deter her when I was elsewhere.............good luck :eek: |

Thanks all for responding. I am doing the same thing, limiting her area but this is getting exhausting for me! she wiggles so much with joy when a family member comes home i am sure she will blow out her stitches. I talked to the vet this afternoon and they said mainly no running or jumping. doing my best. |
for the first few days after gracie was spayed she was very calm and slept alot...but then watch out wild woman!!! I just tried to keep her calm by taking some of her "get crazy toys" put away lol!! and just kept an extra close eye on her. And she knew when she was getting too active....(she is kind of a wimp and won't work through pain) and she would stop being wild.... |
By now you probably have a handle on the situation, but I agree with everyone elses advice. Kip is 6y/o but I remember that she wanted to jump up on furniture and that is the worst thing to have happen. It will help being home with her all weekend, assuming you have been at work all week. Stay home and keep her company so she doesn't have to be penned up all the time, but it is probably best to confine her ... and FORGET the seditives. |
