Eating too fast Just wondering if anyone has a Yorkie that devours their food without breathing..as if their afraid someone will take it away. What do you do and how do you train them not to do this? |
This usually happens more with young dogs and they seem to outgrow it. I think it's behavior they learn in a litter environment with the other pups 'competing' for the food. Here's a link to a bowl you may want to check out, though. Durapet ™ Slow-Feed Stainless Steel Bowls, Dog Bowls & Feeders, Stainless Steel Bowls |

I use a large bowl like that for one of my great danes that eats to fast, he is 5 years and will never eat like a gentleman  I have also used a large rock in the bowl that the dog need to eat around. |

I used the Break fast bowl. It did NOT work for me. I have tried putting things in Cooper's bowl and that does not work. I have tried sitting for weeks feeding her one piece at a time, all that gets me is sore finger tips. I would LOVE to know how to correct this problem, she is 10 months old. I took Cooper from a home where she was outside with a Great Dane, German Shepherd, and a dachshund. She was low gal on the totem pole for about 8 weeks so I am afraid this is a lifetime habit. I look forward to seeing other suggestions I can try. |
You could probably use a large jelly roll pan and spread the food onto it. It will take a pup quite a bit longer to eat it spread out. |

I use the brake fast bowl with Jada. She would eat so fast she would throw up maybe once a week. It did work for us. She didn' slow down much at first but after a couple of months she does not eat near as fast. I think every furbaby is different. What works for one may not work for another. Trial and error like everything else with these little ones.:) |
