I'm so heartbroken..maybe I shouldn't get her spayed

I got Sugar spayed last Thursday, I just got home from animal medical centre to have her stitches removed.
I don't know how other surgeons do it, but the surgeon who perform the surgery pasted adhesive bandages over the stitches, however he used cotton/cloth (I'm not sure) to protect the stitches, not pasted directly on the stitches itself.
Today is the 10th day, my mum and I brought her to the medical centre... Sugar was frightened, she remembers the scent of the place, my mum stayed at the lobby as I went in the medical room with Sugar, it's a female vet (not the one who performed the surgery) told me it's going to be a little painful to Sugar, and then, she started to tear the adhesive bandages.. Sugar cried, I swear she was crying. It was extremely painful to her. I was panicked, rushed out from the room, at the lobby, my mum and I heard Sugar's voice, she just cried and cried, I was very heartbroken, tears rolled down..
My mum was really upset, she said the surgeon shouldn't have pasted the adhesive bandages over Sugar's tummy.
Minutes later, the vet brought Sugar out, the surface (epidermis) of her skin came out, her dermis was clearly shown. I was shocked and very upset
I knew the surgeon pasted the adhesive bandages because Sugar is a very active little one, and she's very rough when she plays. The bandages is to protect the stitches, just still...I felt very heartbroken.
Did your vet/surgeons paste adhesive bandages after the surgery?
Right now Im not sure if I should bring her to fix her hernia 5-6 months later, I really have no idea.
(A little info about the hernia, the senior vet suggested surgery should be done separately, as Sugar doesn't have much muscles to support, it's OK to fix it together, but it wouldn't do any good to Sugar)
Maybe you think I overreacted, but it was really sad to see their little body shivering in pain.. My mum scolded me, she said I shouldn't get her spayed at first place, Sugar wouldn't have to go through all these :'(

OMG, I don't know why they did that, I have never seen that, I had my Prada spayed last year and it was nothing on top of her stiches that is why I had to use the onesie to keep her from licking them, I had my hubbies yorkie rusell done a few months ago too and same thing nothing on top of the stiches plus my vet used the self disolving ones, but one did not and I had to go back to get it removed. I am so sorry, did they give you any medication for that?

Yes, the vet gave me antiseptic which is safe for dogs..
Oh my god I just wanted to cry all over again

thats horrible, poor baby. my vet uses disolving ones also. and they werent coverered with anything.

Ouch! I can totally understand your being upset. Sophie didn't have any bandages. Just the e-collar to keep her from messing with her dissolving stitches.

She has e-collar and all that, this is Sugar before we visited the vet. The e collar is not comfortable, I know. But Sugar kept wanting to touch the bandages, I just have to leave it this way..

(the picture) Sugar was expecting belly rubs

oh CRAP Find a new VET ! That's awful ! Mine had tiny little scars - completely healthy looking and not one sign of adhesive - that had to really hurt her and the vet should DEF have known better.

What the heck was he thinking ? I've never seen that happen and poor baby - I don't blame her or you for crying - that looks very very painful

violet voon 02-07-2010 05:05 AM

My hands are shaking, my tears are rolling down.. I feel horrible... I feel very sorry for Sugar. I couldn't think back the scene in the room, she was crying, I knew she wanted me to be there but I couldn't stay in the room, I couldn't control my tears, her voice of pain was killing me

I agree...Molly didnt have any covering over her stitches and they were dissolvable anyway. She just had one staple at the end which they removed after 10 days, and Molly didnt even flinch when they did it.
My old doggy had several ops to remove mammary tumous and never had the wounds covered either.
I would want some answers before i used that vet again. :(

oh girl, I just showed it to my son he is a vet tech, and he said that he's never seen that done, he said to put the antiseptic on it a few times a day, and keep it dry, it should heal in a few days, :(:( , My heart goes out to you and your puppy.
hugs,

I'm far from knowing truly what vets do - but I do know that my girls came home with nothing adhesive cept (stitches) and little butterfly tapes which fell off on their own - never heard one cry either - Cheri was wanting to play the next day and the hardest part was trying to keep her still.....

Why he covered her whole tummy with that strong adhesive is beyond my understanding - I'd be crying too:( once you settle down - maybe consider a new vet before doing anything else. I just dont think that was needed for a spay.

violet voon 02-07-2010 05:34 AM

I just re-apply the antiseptic, I\'m glad she didn\'t cry now, she is playing with her favorite toy, she looks fine.
Everything was okay before I brought her to the medical centre, she eats, plays like normal the day after the surgery, I didn\'t expect it to be happened, I didn\'t know it was all wrong until today, because no one told me they shouldn\'t put adhesive over stitches.
It was her 1st birthday yesterday, we didn\'t celebrate and today she has the worst day ever since she was born..

Is there any foods I should give Sugar for speed recovery?

What can I get her now? Is there any foods good for Sugar\'s condition?

jencar98 02-07-2010 05:38 AM

OMG....that poor girl and you too, hon. That is just beyond horrible, why would a vet do that?!? Working with rescue I\'ve had numerous dogs spayed and neutered and NEVER had anything like that done, they\'ve always used the surgical glue. And, I\'ve never had one dog have any problem with it, never even used an e-collar.....maybe I\'ve just been lucky?

You definitely need to find another vet.....but not before taking pictures to this vet and explaining to them that this was not necessary and actually was extremely harmful to your dog.

WTH, they can not have been taught that in vet school!
