Need advice - 9 week old yorkie-poo- vet wants surgery Rocky, my 9 week old does not have all his baby teeth. The vet said it is an overgrowth of gums called congenital gingival hyperplasia and he wants to go in and surgically cut the gums back to reveal the baby teeth. He said it should be done sooner rather that later and has it scheduled for Monday. This is my first small pup :) Any thoughts or concerns? Have you ever seen or heard of this? Thanks so much! I agree about a second opinion. I tried looking this up and it just kept sending me to virus websites... What town is your vet in? |
I am in Cumming, Ga..... Vet told me that you usually see it in older dogs..... I had better search results when I googled gingival hyperplasia....without the word congenital.... Baby teeth are covered up still by gums.... just tips poking through |
Interesting, I have never seen anyone write about this with their Yorkie and find it would be very strange in a 9 week old puppy. Have you called the breeder? Was this puppy on a lot of medication? Frankly, I would either get a second opinion or would take a wait and see as this pup is to young. Why is your vet in such a rush to do this? Doesn't make sense to me. Gingival hyperplasia is overgrowth of the gingiva (gum tissue) characterized by firm, nonpainful swellings associated with the gingiva. Gingival hyperplasia is sometimes referred to as fibromatous periodontal hyperplasia. Gingival hyperplasia is most common in large and giant breed dogs. There is a familial inheritance reported in the boxer, Great Dane, collie, Doberman pinscher, and Dalmatian Causes Familial inheritance Chronic drug administration, most commonly diphenylhydantoin, nitrendipine, nifedipine and cyclosporine What to Watch For Slowly enlarging mass or masses noticed along the gingival margin Bleeding from the gums Mouth discomfort in severe cases Diagnosis Baseline tests, which include a complete blood count (CBC), biochemical profile, and urinalysis, are usually within normal limits. Careful inspection and examination of the entire oral cavity is essential and may be diagnostic. |
He said so that the baby teeth will not embed in the jaw bone..... I am going to go to another vet this afternoon for a second opinion but I cannot find a dental specialist around me... |
I do not have any information on this but just wanted to wish you well with your little one. |
ok... saw a second vet and she said no surgery..... give him time, he might be a late bloomer :) On the other hand, he started coughing this morning and did so at the vet office.... was told it was kennel cough- poor guy :( Marcie |

No antibiotics, but breathing treatments 3 times a day for 10 days with nebulizer at home..... does that sound right? Should he have got antibiotics? No fever, no pnumonia....just starting the coughing. I actually thought he had something stuck in his throat and was just trying to clear it... :( Thanks, Marcie |
