I feed Acana, Nature's Variety Prairie and Nature's Variety Instinct.
Good to know they are on the "good list" :thumbup::thumbup:
BTW...Acana should be listed on the "Good List" it is made by the makers of Orijen (still grain free but just has less protein).

I just received this reply from Nature's Variety and it was just as I remembered.

"Dear Bonny,

Thanks for emailing! No, none of our diets or ingredients contain ethoxyquin. We have special agreements with our raw suppliers that they do not use ethoxyquin.

Taste of the Wild
 
I am so confused, frustrated, and concerned. How does one get the "truth"?

I just talked with a Customer Rep from Diamond Dog Food Company - makers of Taste of the Wild. I was assured that Taste of the Wild does not contain BHA or BHT and does not "add" any ethoxyquin. However she did say that some of the protein sources that they used did contain ethoxyquin but it was destroyed in the extrusion process.

My dogs are doing well on the TOTW High Prairie Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison formula. I have buy kibble today and like each time I buy a bag, I worry myself sick. I tried the home cooking, but for 7 yorkies plus the boxer it just didn't work for me.

I know what you mean, Cindy. One of my favorite foods for my guys was TOTW's Pacific Stream - they do so well on it. But, it DOES contain this stuff so I took it out of their rotation. I wish I knew just how much was removed in processing....but then again, I'd probably still worry that it was too much. Why can't they find another preservative, you can't tell me there aren't others to choose from. It just seems like there's a problem with every single food I want to try. :(

Does this substance have anything to do w/raw? I noticed that Primal was not on either list...I saw Natures Variety, but guessed that must have been their kibble? Anyone know?

As far as I know, it's a preserved used in dry food (kibble) only.

NV customer responses contradict themselves then as one response says it is already in the food, and the other says they have special agreements.

This is exactly why I home cook.

Here are the two replies I got back from TOTW regarding ethoxyquin, BHT, and BHA. It seems like the problem is that the equoxyquin is added to the fish meal on board ships to prevent spoiling and is destroyed in the cooking process. This concurs with other information posted. So I guess I'll buy another bag of TOTW today :D



Dear Cindy:

Thank you for your inquiry. There is not any ethoxyquin added to the Taste
of the Wild pet foods.
Fish meal is preserved with ethoxyquin on the ships prior to entering port.
Ethoxyquin is most effective at preventing rancidity in the highly volatile
fish meal. Rancidity in ingredients can lead to severe illness. Fish meal
is used in pet food formulas as an excellent quality source of amino acids
and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3¹s are vital for a strong immune system,
healthy skin and coat, controlling inflammation and even preventing certain
types of cancer.

Most of the ethoxyquin is destroyed in the cooking process, requiring other
preservatives to be used. Tests for ethoxyquin are run routinely on Taste of
the Wild. The results are typically less than 5ppm. This is equivalent to
0.0005% or 5 ten-thousandth¹s of a percent. This is a true trace level that
many laboratories are unable to detect. The amount allowed, and considered
to be safe, by the FDA is 75ppm.

There is a small supply of ethoxyquin free fish meal available in the United
States. However, this is not adequate to meet the supply demands for all pet
food manufacturers that use fish meal. Also, the peroxide levels are much
higher than we feel comfortable with. Peroxide is an indicator of oxidation.
Peroxide can cause vomiting and may even cause damage to vital organs.

Ethoxyquin is being used in scientific research as a cancer fighting
antioxidant. When present in controlled amounts, it has never been shown to
cause harmful effects.

From what I understand the FDA requires the addition of ethoxyquin to prevent spoilage in "fish meal" on board the ships where the fish meal is processed. According to the TOTW Vet there is only a very limited suppoly of ethoxyquin free fish meal available in the states. So... if the food you are feeding contains fish meal then most likely it had the ethoxyquin added to the fish meal before it reached the manufacturer, but was destroyed in the cooking process.

If the product you are feeding has fish and/or fish meal I would assume that it may have ethoxyquin - but you may want to contact the raw food manufacturer directly for their input.

I thought ethoxyquin was present only in foods containing fish/fish meal, until I was corrected in this thread. See my post #20 and the reply in post #22. The description of the dangers of this chemical still worry me, although I would love to be able to add TOTW back in to our rotation. The reply your received from TOTW shows the amounts they use are equivalent to the amounts still allowed in human foods, so maybe it is safe? Oh pooh! I just don't know. :confused:

Sorry - not sure which response you mean? :)

Nature's Variety's response to me was that their foods DO NOT contain ethoxyquin at all. I've read posts where several members have received this same reply from NV, I have never heard of any deviation from this answer until now.

I have heard that Natural Balance products DO contain it but I have never fed this food and I've never contacted Natural Balance.

Wasn't this what Natural Balance or Solid Gold said?
I remember when someone posted the individual company responses here on YT.
Natural Balance does have it in it. But they say "we do not add it".

According to the response I received from the TOTW vet, it is required by the FDA to use the preservative ethoxyquin in fish products on the ships prior to entering port. I did not think to ask if it was used as a preservative in other protien sources. I was also advised that the ethoxyquin is almost completely destroyed in the cooking process.
