Anybody spayed their girl when they were a bit older?

Uni will be 3 yrs in a few days. I want to get her spayed and am researching around my area for prices, etc. Has anyone spayed their girl when they were around Uni's age or older that has never been bred?

Also should i only look for a vet that does laser spay? Is it considerably more expensive? How does it make it better? Did anyone notice any temperament changes? Calmer? That's what I'm hoping for, but not fatter LOL.

Well, obviously with having a boy dog, I'm not gonna be much help here, lol.

But I wanted to add our family Golden Retriever (who passed in '04) got spayed later in life (but she was around 8 years old at the time) because of health issues that began to arise from NOT being spayed. The vet said we could have avoided these issues had she been spayed younger so while she was under for removing tumors, she also had an emergency spay. She came out of it GREAT and it bought her a few extra years of life when she was going downhill fast.

My dad's female Jack Russell got spayed around 1 year of age and it took a couple more months for her to "calm down" but I honestly don't know if that was because of the spay or just aging.

Good luck!

Yes, Ellie was spayed at age 6.
She did well with it.
Her personality changed it bit for a couple months (kind of more grumpy than normal), but all went back to normal. It did not slow her down.

I just had my Moka spayed last Tuesday. She will be 3 this spring, and she has never been sniffed by a male, lol, much less bred or pregnant. She had been a little off her normal self for a couple of weeks prior so I was anxious to get the surgery overwith. Turned out, the vet found pyometra in her uterus during the surgery. Because of that, I think it's taking her a little longer to come around afterwards. Just today, (day 5) I am seeing a glimmer of her feeling better, and her being more active. She's been a little aggressive with my baby, but I think it is due to pain issues. Today she's been much better. Good luck with your baby.

Holy crapola! I just read about pyometra today, scary stuff! I'm glad she is doing better! That is what scared me to get this done asap! Did she get a laser spay or regular spay? Anyone have info on laser?

My baby had the traditional surgery. They did a fabulous job on her sutures.

We had my son's Jack rusell Taffy spayed at age 5 and she is doing great, a bit more calmer and mellow, but I think is because of age more than spay related.
hugs,

Hey! I had a spay scheduled for my Maddie in Jan. she will 3 in May. However, work prevented me from taking days off work. We are doing it this Spring.

I asked the vet about laser vs traditional. He said with laser there is typically less recovery time. It was about $100 more.

I highly recommend Laser spay!! Laci was fine the next day, she has virtually no scaring at all! She was not in to much pain afterwards. The money is well worth it!! There are no staples or stiches to remove and the insision was about 1.5 inches. It was 100.00 more!

I have only heard good things about it also...

Thanks everybody! I will def look into the laser spay. Hopefully by this spring or summer also. Don't want to have to pay that $100 rabies tag fee again for nonaltered pets.

MollysMum54 02-01-2010 02:16 PM

Molly was spayed when she was 2 1/2 years old. She was under the weather for about 24 hours, then after that, you wouldnt have known she had anything done. The worst bit was the hard cone collar which she hated, but had to wear as she was desperate to get at her stitches. i wish i'd had one of those lovely soft collars.

violet voon 02-01-2010 07:20 PM

I just got Sugar spayed on last Thursday (regular spay), stitches will be removed on this coming Sunday. She is 1 year old, 2.2lbs
I made her stay in the hospital for 2 nights although the surgeon didn't suggest it, I know I'll be worried to death if I bring her home the day she got spayed! She's doing great the next day I visited her.
Anyway she's all the same, including her behaviour and personality... I secretly wished she would be calmer but apparently she still barks at my sister as usual. LOL

OMG 2.2 lbs!!! She's so tiny! Uni is 5.5 and I already think she is small! Glad to hear she is doing well.

Roxiesmama 02-03-2010 03:00 AM

Roxie is 3 and is scheduled to be spayed next week. I am super nervous about the whole thing...though I feel a bit better after reading some of the responses on here. I am taking her to the SPCA to have it done, and it's going to run $275-$300...less expensive than my vet's office.
