the size of rice and SHOULD pass threw.
When they don't they cut the insides of your pup's intestines, cause
them to bleed and send them to the ER to be hooked up on IV for
three days not knowing if they will live or die. I know this for a fact
because it happend to Buddy. I feel better telling all of you this but
you do what you want. You never had a problem with one you say
neither did I until Buddy woke up throwing up blood and had a stool
the color of tar at 2:ooam. I rushed him to the ER and they couldn't
keep him from vomiting. They found, after extensive tests, grit in
his lower intestines which is where the bleeding was coming from.
They found this doing an uppper and lower GI series. The grit
was from the Nylabones he had been chewing on his first year
of life. $2,220.00 later he was fine and came home on the forth day.
They should be taken off the market. Your dog is chewing plastic
and when these tiny slivers of glass, that should pass threw
and don't they cut your dog up inside.
I would never ever buy another product that Nylabone makes even
the digestable ones. A beef bone is all natural and safe to chew
on and provides the chewing needed for you puppy or dog.
Don;t take a chance and let this happen to you beloved pet.

:thumbup::thumbup: Great post!!

I too will never give one of those to my pups. I read the fine print when I
first bought one, and needless to say it went right into the trash!
So sorry that Buddy had to go through that, what a nightmare for the both of you!

Your are 100% right, they have no business being sold as chewies!!

Bella's nylabone is going in the trash immediately. I hate to because she loves it so much but I can quickly replace it with deer antlers. So glad those were mentioned because both of my sons hunt and can supply those for free! Thanks for all the good info!

I am sorry when I hear about things that happen with nylabones. I still say that if you take it away when there is any damage being done to it, you will not have problems.

br1ttan1h 02-01-2010 08:59 AM

Neither one of my pups likes the Nylabone. Himalayan Chews and bully sticks are a different story, they are like puppy crack. I need to find where I can buy the antlers.

This makes no sence, really. If a dog is chewing on a nylabone the
fragments come off because their chewing on it. Makes no difference
if you throw it away after a 1/2" has been chewed or 5" chewed,
fact remains fragments are being swollowed.
I am sharing my story with all of you to let you know what can
happen. It's your decision to take the chance.

If bully sticks don't last, try himalayan chews or antlers- deer, elk, moose.

Where do you buy the himalyan chews and the antlers?

Are bones safe? I would worry about sharp pieces of them being swallowed and possibly cutting her.

They are all intact. I am not talking about the ones that splinter. The hard ones do not get chewed like that (at least not by my pups)....I can take some pics to show you. The ones that start to get teeth marks in them hit the trash!

I appreciate that you are sharing your experience....I am simply saying that the Nylabones in my home do not have any damage on them at all. There are no fragments...and if I see any indentation at all, I remove them. It takes a LOT of chewing for any marks to be seen.

I do not take any chances with my pups . ... that is why I do not give them bully sticks. I have my own feelings about them. To each his own but my vet has had to operate and remove a bunch of them from dogs....she has never had to remove a nylabone.

I don't believe bones are safe. They say that some are. I think it is the same with them as with nylabones. Remove at the first sign of them ingesting any of it.

I do not give anything edible except for food and an occasional treat.

This phrase makes me think maybe I am not talking about the same bone. Cooper has never had any missing from her bone, she just chews it for about a month and I replace it.
Does the ^above bold^ mean Buddy was eating them??

I am convinced we are not talking about the same bone! There is NO WAY that much of one could be chewed off by one of my yorkies! She is talking about 1/2 inch or more chewed OFF...nothing comes off of the ones I use. They do get some scratch marks after a while...but I don't even think I could take a knife and easily cut a piece off! There are Nylabones that are edible...not talking about them!

I have had medium outdoor dogs get choked on bones before, that is why I was thinking they could be dangerous.

The nylabones feel as hard as rocks! I toss them whenever I see they are getting teeth marks. It seems like a bone could just break off in pieces, then it could be too late.

Yeah! These are the ones I talking about. It takes Cooper, who chews constantly if I let her, about a month to make enough teeth marks for me to see. Then it gets tossed.
I don't think she could eat it if she wanted to.

I am talking about the original Nylabone. It came in white, blue with
little nubs on them then came a chocolate colored one. They are
made of plastic and if a dog chews hard enough on it little dents
go in it. Bud's never broke off in a chunck like I've read but he did
chew the bone and left marks in it. Those marks ment a tiny piece
of fragment came off and into his mouth. I am not talking about the
white hard plastic ones, I've never bought those but the whitish
clear ones I'm talking about. They are all over the stores and come
in different colors. They are dangerous. I've never seen a dog not
put a mark on one. How can they not chewing on them!
They always got thrown away after a bit to be replaced with a new one.
Who knew the damage that was being done.
Yes they can be chewed down, apparently your pups are not aggressive
chewers, Bud was. He puts dents into a beef bone when he chews on them.
That's not easy to do but he does it. I bet I couldn't even carve a dent
on one with a knife but he can with his teeth. Different dogs have different
chewing desires that's why they make several different chew bones.
The average chewer and aggressives chewer. Nylabones come like this.

He wasn't actually eating them, they weren't a treat, however he did
have a high chewing need and these seemed to fit the bill. I never
realized about the fragments, never read the back of the package
until after the fact. I was ignorant to the fact that manufacturers
make things for $ not for the safety of our pets. They get away
with these things due to the fine print. My vet told me to read the
label. I was shocked. Yes, he did chew down on them and I would
replace it when he did.
I think we are talking about the same bone. The three I know of are
the hard plastic ones, the ones that look like gel (these are the ones
I purchased) and the editable ones which I never bought, they came
out after. It may be hard to understand how it can happen especially
when you pup does not chew hard. Aggressive chewers can go threw
these bones like a buzz saw.
