help with itching Hi, I have 5 year old yorkie. We live in NH and he has been scratching and licking himself a lot. after he licks, his hair is stiff. What can I do?:aimeeyork |
Welcome to YT! It may be the dry winter air. Do you run a humidifier? That might help. Shampoo w/oatmeal in it can really help with that. I like Bio-Groom brand myself. If that doesn't help, he may have an food allergy problem or something else. |
itchy pup Thanks, I have tried all that. I feed him IAMS lamb and rice. What should I feed him? If I leave his shirt on, he doesn't scratch ir like as much. John:animal36 |
I would look into changing his diet. I have had two girls with itchy skin. They can chew at themselves so that they remove the hair and leave the skin all irritated. I have had great success with the Natural Balance line. I am sure you will get plenty of great advice here on YT. Also look through the older posts because itchy skin has been addressed many times. Good Luck! |
I almost forgot, Welcome John! ;);) |

Hot Rod was so itchy when we got him. Our vet recommended medicated shampoo and medicated conditioner. I don't know if the food change or the sham/cond did the trick but he has been good for 18 months now. :) Food changes take some time to work through so keep that in mind if you think there may not be any relief from a different diet. Good luck. :) As a quick fix, you can try one of my collars for your little one. I have a customer who uses one on each of her two for itching. :) |
could be winter as skin gets dryer in winter so your dog is 5? has this been ongoing issue or recent? If recent due to age I would have thyroid panel done next blood draw to rule out hypothyroid as allergies show up from age 6 mos to 3 years old here is a thread with info i wrote on it as been dealing with this since dd was 6 mos old it may help http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...y-what-do.html |
My Pommie is allergic to any grain. Feed him Natural Balance Simple Solution....it's duck and potato. Seems to cause the least amount of biting and licking. ~Joanne~ |
