CoproBan to stop dog from eating poop I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about Betty Boop eating her poop. Betty Boop's vet gave me some CoproBan and told me to give 1/2 tab a day for a week to see if this would break her habit of eating he poop. Has anyone had any bad experiences from this medicine. I think it contains MSG, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, natural and artificial flavors, and Cellulase from dried Aspergillus niger fermentation product, soy lecithin, and salt. It is a Roast Beef flavored tablet. Surely the vet wouldn't recommend it if it was unhealthy for my little girl. He said some dogs never grow out of it no matter what we try, but that I needed to try and break her habit right now. He had a dog that never outgrew it. |
I never tried it because my poop eater eats the other 2 dogs poop, I know so gross! I have one that has a very bad tummy and bad allergies and I have been afraid to give them all something to stop the poop eater. Pixie is 4 and has never grown out of it. I had pom who did as a puppy but outgrew it by 9 months old. So I just have to try really hard to pick poop up quickly, but they are pad trained and she gets to it during the night sometimes. Keep us posted f you try it and it works. |
Betty Boop is pad trained, too, and I know what you are talking about. You have to be really quick! About 95% of the time, when it's not raining (it never snows where I live), she does her business outside. Since I never let her out of my sight, I can immediately pick it up. BUT, we have an outside cat........you know the rest of the story! I am constantly brushing her teeth and tongue. This is a must if she is going to give me kisses. I will probably go ahead and try the pills. It's only for a week. |
I am new here so not sure what you have tried. But I have heard that if you feed them pineapple they will not eat thier poop. They like the taste of it going in but apparently don't when it comes out. I would try just one good chunk (about an inch by an inch ) to see if it helps. |
I tried it as a last resort, I tried all the natural stuff first. My dog wouldnt eat it, even if I smashed it up in the food so I have no idea if it would have worked. But I would try the pineapple first. |
The pineapple sounds like a good idea. Thanks. |
Just wondering if you tried the pineapple and if it did work for you?? I hope so. |
The pineapple didn't work. Just wanted to let you know. Sorry it took me so long to reply. My best bet is to just try and keep it picked up as much as possible. However, she doesn't do it a lot anymore. |
I saw an episode of Dog Whisperer with that Cesar guy and he was trying to break a Lhso Apso from eating poop. He said dogs eat poop for 2 reasons - boredom and missing nutrients from their diet. He started giving the dog bananas as treats and it worked! He said she needed potassium and that eating the bananas curbed her urge to eat the poop. He had some of her poop on the floor and every time she tried to eat it, he stopped her and gave her a little chunk of banana. Eventually, she stopped eating the poop and got bananas as treats all the time. So, maybe some sort of vitamin deficiency? |
I just love that show! I missed that episode. I have noticed when I'm eating a banana that Betty Boop goes absolutely CRAZY for a bite. Going to the store today to buy a few more, along with some veggies for her. I'm going to give these along with her dry Wellness. I think Betty Boop does get a little bored at times. The weather doesn't always permit going for walks outside. Spring is near, though, and the walks will pick up. Along with a few banana treats, veggies, and walks, maybe this will be the fix to her problem. Thanks for replying and letting us know about the suggestion from Cesar. |
You know, I might try freezing some chunks of banana. By freezing some chunks, she will always have some ready to eat! |
Freezing is a good idea - I might even try that. Mine don't eat poop (thanks goodness!!) but they do like snacks and bananas are a good, healthy one. It was funny, on the show, they kept referring to eating poop as the dogs "unfortunate eating disorder". lol I thought that was a nice way of putting it! You might be able to watch clips or the full episode on the website. Not sure though - never tried. Well, I really hope this helps Betty Boop! Good luck!! :) |
Enchilila: Coproban is completely safe, and you are right...it is really the MSM that more or less discourages the dog from eating their (or others) poops. There are a lot of reasons why a dog will eat poop (poop eating is technically called coprophagany. In fact, it is commonly thought that the real reason (dating back a very long time) for dogs eating poop stems from the fact that dogs have evolved from wolves (as we all know)...as wolves that were not particularly scared of humans moved closer to human settlements, they began eating our garbage (and our poop). The are more or less scavengers. There are also many reasons why YOUR dog will eat poop, including stress, hormonal imbalance, and glandular issues. Coproban is a great product...another one I've had great results with is called "SEP" or "Stop Eating Poop" (gotta love that name, eh?). The major effective ingredient in SEP is glutamic acid which ultimately makes the dog's poop taste bitter and will get them to stop eating poop. :) |
