New advice Our yorkie is almost 8 months and according to our vet ready to go into heat. She wants to spay her before her first heat. Should we do this before, or after her first heat. This is my first posting and I hope I'm doing it correctly. I just want to do what would be best for our puppy.:) |
Before is a good idea. Welcome to YT!:) |
I would go ahead and do it now. That's what I've always done with all of mine during my life. It's an old wive's tale to wait until after the 1st heat.:) |
There really are not health benefits to waiting until after the first heat to spay them. I would go ahead and get it over with....why not? Just plan accordingly as they should not be spayed DURNING their heat cycles or very close to its onset. |
I had my Lia done after her first heat, she was 10 months. I waited because she was just under 3lbs and I was afraid but everything went well. I did notice that her nipples did not flatten out completely and I'm not sure if this was because of the heat cycle. Maybe an experienced YT could anser this. Lola was done at 6 months and her nipples are non-existant. |
Defiantly before. Spaying before the first heat; Removes the risk of ovarian, uterine and cervical tumors Cuts down on the risk of Breast Cancer by 100% It eliminates the risk of pyometra (which is an infection of the uterus). 23% of unaltered females are effected by this. Spaying reduces hormonal changes that could interfere with the treatment of certain diseases (such as diabetes or epilepsy) |
My Vet told me to do it before. BUT never during!Don't wait much longer you could risk her starting into a heat cycle when she has her surgery. If I remember right they don't bleed the first couple days of the heat cycle. |
I was told by my vet to do it at 6 months old and at least 3#'s. |

We waited until all of kandi's baby teeth had a chance to come out on their own, because we wanted to do both at the same time because of the anesthesia. Unfortunately, she went into her first heat before we took her (actually, just after we called to schedule it). That heat was no fun for her at all. I wish we had done it sooner. They probably had to pull the same number of teeth in the long run. |
Thank You! As a newbie I was not sure what to do, but obviously now is the time. Zoe is so small (4#) I was afraid surgery. But thank you for all of the support. I will call my vet tomorrow and make sure I get it done right away. Thanks again. What a great web site!!! |
Before is better for small breeds, but not during. Four pounds is big enough, but make sure your vet is comfortable with small breeds and follows a safe anesthetic protocol (you can read about this in the YT Library). Yes, you did post correctly. :) |

Pyometra & Uterus Infections in Dogs i have seen dogs as young as 1-2 yrs old get it Just make sure to do all safety precautions -- blood and urine checked before anesthesia propofol, isoflurine, iv fluids and catheterization and tube needs to be cat tube or smaller so as to not affect trachea - there are smaller tubes used in ferrets etc so ask the vet about this as some do not have small tubes so make sure they do |
interesting we were just talking about this today and now this thread came up - we need to pray for this little one - i may be wrong but this could be pyometra and why spaying is so important http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...help-asap.html |
Thank you so much!! I love this site! There is so much information and "real" help here. Gosh, I just think it's awesome. For a while, I thought I was the only one just absolutly "nuts" about my little yorkie Zoe!! After loosing my last little girl Katie on Nov. 15, I thought I could never fall in love again with another pet. But I did and it has made our house a home again. So cool to hear the clicking of tiny toenails on the hardwoods!!! Thanks everyone for your help. She goes in on Friday to get it done. I probably won't breathe for the entire time she's there!!! |
