What did I do wrong? So, tonite I was brushing Maggie's teeth and when I finished, I noticed blood on the toothbrush. Then I looked in her mouth, her gums on the right side were bleeding. Did I brush too hard? Does she have dental issues? |

I have done this to Daisy before and Daisy is almost 6 years old. I think it is like us if there is plaque and we don't get it out from under the gums they can bleed a lil. I I kinda blame myself bc I was slacking in the brushing dept. for a while and that is when it happend. so now I am better at it. I also give her those white bones at pet smart to chew on every once in a while. She also loves this bone I bought at pet smartNylabone Puppy Stix Flexible Chew - Toys - Dog - PetSmart I had originally bought one for Pixie and Daisy stole it. It has helped Daisy's teeth. I just have to take it away if it gets a lil chewd up. |

Maggie was a year old in September. It did not look like she had any plaque or tartar buildup. I don't brush every night but try to do it 3-4 times a week. Do you think I need to have the vet look at her? |
It could be that you brushed a little hard. Hot Rod's gums will bleed every once in awhile when brushed...but then I haven't been the diligent about their brushing and he does have some tartar on his canines. :( |

Brushing That happened to me once and it was because I brushed little too hard. I felt bad. |
It also can be a sign that you're not brushing enough:(. Almost like flossing w/ us...if you don't floss often, you will have bleeding gums when you do. Yorkies are prone to teeth problems unfortunately. This was one of many reasons I chose to feed raw...no brushing needed b/c Snick's teeth are sparkling. I still brush em once a week but prob should more often. What type of brush are you using? Most pet supply stores sell way to large brushes for our lil guys. The brush that works best for us is an infant brush..perfect size and no harm bristles. Gauze is also good, but not as effective. Good luck:) Snick & Viv |
