Lepto Vaccine Help
 

Hi,

I have a question about the Lepto Vaccination.

I go to Banfield Hospital with two of my yorkie girls. I started going there since they were 10 weeks old and getting them all the shots and boosters as needed.
I researched Lepto online and I am torn on this subject because it says a lot on internet that it shouldn't be given to small breed dogs. My puppies barly go outside and if they do they are outside for probably 10-15 min tops.

I originally did not want the Lepto vaccine to be given to them, but I had hard time telling the vet that it's not recommended for small breed. He is a vet and should know better but still he said I should get it done. So I did get both of the vaccinated and they told me I'm all good and squared until later this year.

I went back last week with both of them because Lily's knee cap popped and I wasn't sure what happened so I took her in. They told me that they got the original Lepto vaccination but they never got boostered and they don't understand why it happened but they are guessing it was a mix up.

Anyways, so they gave them another Lepto shot combined with Lyme shot, and told me I have to come back in 3 weeks to get it boostered and I will have to pay for both of them because the plan that I have only covers 2 shots and they already had one before.

I'm a little scared when it comes to Lepto shot and the fact that they are so disorganized and they had a "mix up" and now my pups had to get it second time when I didn't want it originally...

What do you guys think about this situation and the Lepto shots overall?
Can a puppy overdoes on those vaccines?

Hi. My Yorkie (Douglas) was going to get a lepto shop because we go camping in our RV once in a while. My vert told us that she doesn't administer this shot any longer to small breeds because she has lost a couple of them in the past. We feel it is more dangerous than the slight possibility of a dog that doesn't go out often or for extended periods, and mostly in your back yard contracting the disease. We decided NOT to do it.

Jackson got the Lepto as a pup (and he's a bigger Yorkie, 12lbs now, 6lbs at the time)
and had a terrible reaction. I will never get it again. But I understand it's necessary in
some areas and some pups do fine on it. I just never wanna see him like that again!

mine had a bad reaction too. it was given to him at Banfield and they made me feel like a paranoid person when i questioned if it was necessary!

I always tell my new families no leptos or corona virus vaccination. Lyme is very dependent on where you live, but I don't usually recommend them. All of those vaccinations can be fatal to small breeds. The only vaccine that is required is rabies.....so you do have a say in what is administered to your dog.

Google search on Dr. Jean Dodd's vaccination protocol. Print it out and take it with you when you take your dog for it's next exam. If your vet doesn't listen to you, find another.

Thanks Guys... I knew I shouldn't have do the Lepto/Lyme... I live in an area where homes have acre lots and we have a lot of trees but I go out with them for very limited times.
And Banfield made me seem like a crazy person too when I questioned them, and after I didn't want any they gave them too... Also, when I was there the other day, they were busy, and while I was with one of the docs in the room, some nurse in the back was screaming "Shut up" at one of the crying dogs, and after that I just didn't want to be there anymore - I thought they were so nice and pleasent but they just suck - I think.

I believe we are killing our dogs with over vaccinations and it is great you are questioning this as you should. Many vets make their $$$ off of their "advice" in regards to shots and are not looking out for the best intereset of your dog. There is a ton of information out on the internet if you goggle this so you can make an informed decisions.

My vet won't give the lepto vaccine to Emmett. He says that there really is no need for it, and it is dangerous for little dogs to have it.

If your vet won't listen to what you want, find another one. I think some vets try and force these vaccines on us because they just want to make more money.

Banfield is notorious for over-vaccinating. :thumbdown

Remember, most often the deadly reaction to lepto doesn't happen with the first vaccination. It's usually the second or even third shot, after the body has had a chance to build up antibodies, that causes the problems. Just because your puppy did okay with the first vaccination does not mean he will be okay with the booster.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial rather than a viral disease. Consequently, the canine lepto shot is not a modified live virus vaccine, but is a chemically inactivated bacterium containing more potential antigens (individual disease units) capable of causing reactions....Anaphylaxis does not occur after the first inoculation, but after the second or third when antibodies produced by the puppy’s immune system become hypersensitive.

My vet is homeopathic and does not give lepto. I also do not let my Yorkie, who is around 8 pounds now, have more than one shot at a time with at least two weeks between shots. I have heard too many horror stories abount over vaccination.

Our vet does not give the lepto to our babies either!

Neither of my boys have had Lepto shots.
At the vet I take Mickey to (different than one I used to take Max to) her Vet Tech's Yorkie had a really severe reaction. He said he was lucky he was at work with the puppy.
The risk of a bad reaction is to great for me to take with my pups (in my opinion).:aimeeyork

OMG! We have our pup health insurance with Banfield, too and they really push us to do all posible vaccines. After doing my home work and searching internet, I'm so scared to give my little 4-pounder lepto and lyme. He was recovering after distemper and parvo 3 weeks! On the top of it, he got cannel cough from that hospital. As soon as we neuter him, that included in his insurance, we will find another vet.

Please be very careful if you let them neuter him. Make sure their anesthetic protocol is correct because some Banfields do not.

This is very upsetting...I dunno what to do. Zoey had a Lepto shot last January, before she came home to us. She lived in Salem at the time. We have loads of wild critters going through our yard...just recently saw a fox, a raccoon, a couple of possums...always skunks, rabbits, etc.

Our vet said he had 5 cases of Lepto last year. Arghhhh....
