Puppy throwing up! Chase is 5 1/2 months old. We took him on a road trip this weekend and he threw up twice in the car. I assumed he had motion sickness (only other time he has been sick was when my little girl decided to give him a ride in the hammock!). We recently switched him from Iams puppy food to Wellness Super 5 mix puppy food. He doesn't eat the Wellness like he did the Iams but he does get about a cup down each day very slowly. This morning at about 5am he started heaving and threw up a brown liquid. He's acting fine right now but he hasn't eaten anything to speak up so far this morning (it's now almost 11am). One other thing I need to add was Friday afternoon (before our trip) he had jumped up on our bathtub and grabbed a piece of bath soap and preceeded to try and chew on it. He didn't get any large pieces bitten off but he did have bite marks all over the bar before I realized he had it. So.. as you can see, lots of things going around in my mind as to why he might have been sick. When he was sick in the car it was food and light in color. Again, when he got sick early this morning it was light brown fluid.. almost like diahhrea consistancy. Help! Just wondering if anyone has any advice. |
I would call the vet. soap has an alkaline in it and it could of irritated his stomach. When you switched his dog food did you do it gradually? Pixie and Daisy are both on wellness and I have no problem with it. I do know that when you switch their food you have to do it slowly by adding a lil of the new into the one he is use to and each day a lil more until he is off his old dog food. I still would call a vet just bc of the soap thing, brown liquid is NOT a good thing. I am thinking that maybe the soad did something. I hope he feels better. keep us posted, I will be praying. |
Yes, I gradually weaned him off the Iams. Like I said, he doesn't go after the Wellness food like he did the Iams but he does eat. I have noticed his poop smells worse on the Wellness and his breath also smells but I assumed it might be because there is alot more nutrition in the Wellness food. Thanks for the reply, I guess I do need to call the vet. Poor little guy. |

Hi there. Sorry to hear about ur Chase. My Chase only eats 1/2 cup each day and he is 7lbs. Does ur guy eat one cup? Well we feed Innova so maybe that is why. If u think it is motion sickness then maybe I would make sure he waits a long enough time after eating b4 going in the car and just go slowly. Just get in the car then get out. Next time get in start the car then out. Next back down driveway. Take rides around the block and bk home. Maybe by easing iinto it gradually may help. Also I suggest a good carseat which will make him feel safe too. There are medicines too if nothing else works. Good luck! |
I'm just guessing on the full cup. He doesn't eat near as much of the Wellness as he did the Iams but I understand that's possible. I just phoned the vet and they told me to keep an eye on him for the next couple of hours and if he doesn't get anymore liquids down or is still laying on the couch (he's been doing most of the morning) to bring him in this afternoon. I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for the replies! |
