Update on Molly & need advise!

Hello all,

Molly turned 13 weeks yesterday! My question is.. when will she stop waking me up every 2 hours at night to go potty? There have been a few nights where she has only woken me once, but more times than not, she wakes me up far too much. I am really needing a good nights sleep for once again! Can I cut off her food and water by a certain time? The other problem is she just doesn't seem to be eating enough to me. She doesn't seem to love the canned food I am giving her either and I bought a case of it! I can't even get her to eat a whole teaspoon of it at once. However, she does love the goats milk that a few of you recommended I give her. I will have to go and buy more of that tomorrow when we are out. Please also tell me how long is it ok to give her goats milk? This puppy seems to go potty more at night time than during the day. I think she sleeps a bit too much during the day also.

Please help me to know what to expect from a 13 week Yorkie in regards to sleep, potty, eating etc...

Thanks bunch!

I was waking up with Jackson once in the middle of the night until he was probably 17-18 weeks old or so. I would pull up food/water by 9 or 10pm and he would be good until about 4am, then we would go back to sleep until 7:30 or so. We had our routine. Then it was playtime from about 7:30-8am. He was in a crate at first but when I allowed him to sleep in my bed for the first night and he slept thru the night... then we just stuck with it! He's been sleeping soundly in my bed ever since and he's a little over 1 year old. He rarely wakes up in middle of night anymore but once in a blue moon he will. I usually try to pick up his water before we fall asleep because he has a tendancy to drink a lot in the middle of the night (maybe boredom?) and then has to go potty earlier than usual (5:30-6am) and I prefer to sleep until 9! ;) I used to try and keep him up & playing for at least an hour before bed, so that way he would crash harder for the night. Wear him out during the day and he should sleep good! ;) Puppies don't take a lot to wear out either. They do a lot of really hard play and then really hard sleep.

As for food - I don't know anything about goats milk but I also had a picky eater on my hands. I would mix his dry food with his wet food and that always worked for us. We tried a few different foods but as a pup, he ate Dog Whisperer puppy food mixed with the canned. Then around 6 months old, he began eating Merrick's Before Grain. Now he does really well on Fromm's!

I woke every couple of hours for quite a awhile.. so you are potty training her outside?? I think I did it until she was about 5 months or so , then I took her out at 11, and she would wake up when I did at 6am.. I never let her feet hit the floor we went right out and she went pee.. she never really has had accident in quite a while. Do you feed her kibble..? When she was a puppy I fed her Eagle Pack hollistic sellect she loved it, I kept that and food down at all times. I never with held anything because she was not a big eater.. she was a picker and still is. Id expect to wake up with her another month or so and she may be able to hold it through the night.. I remember thinking OMG this is no different then having a baby!

Yes I do mix the wet with a bit of the dry (knowing that the most nutrients are from the dry), however, she does not seem to like the wet by itself nor mixed. I bought the Natural Choice Lamb and rice puppy. I will have to just buy 1 can at a time and give it a try. Any suggestions on healthier canned options that your Yorkie puppies like would be appreciated. :) I also bought her probiotics in a salmon oil, but of course my picky eater doesn't like that either.. so I have to try and force that into her with a syringe! She has had so many antibiotics due to her coccidia issue, I wanted to replenish her gut with some probiotics.

@ Jeanm: No, I am potty training her inside on a pad. I live in a 2 story home and there is no way I want to take her outside everytime especially lately with all of the rain we have had and even snow yesterday! Not to mention I have a hyper BIG lab in the back and there is no way she could go there. In the front yard I have a jerk of a neighbor who lets his GOlden Retriever out in the front and she comes straight to MY yard for her stinking potty! Really makes me mad! Needless to say, I don't want my puppy getting their dog's germs. I switched her from Eukanuba (the breeder's food) to Canidae. I grind it up so that it is really small. I don't care to switch her again and figure if I at least can find a canned food that she like, then I can mix it with that until she gets more used to it. It is high on the grading chart and I would really like to keep her on it.

I keep saying that a newborn was waaaay easier! I breastfed all of my kids, so they would just come to bed with me when they woke up to eat. Piece of cake!! :)

Instead of waking up why dont you get a ex pen.. put a pee pad in one end bed toys and food in the other.. It makes life so much easier.. I just babysat a friends puppy for a week , I put up my expen , all his toys in there and a pee pad on the end.. he never had one accident and did great.. I loved the expen because I dont like crates.. It made my life so much easier... !!! If your tired of waking up , consider this.. it works out great!!

I actually do have her in a playpen during waking hours downstairs when we can't watch her. I just worry if I leave her in their at night and stop the crate training, what will I do when we go on vacation or go and visit my mom for a night or 2? I sure don't want to lug that with me everywhere. I am just not sure I want to stop the crate at night. I am hoping that as she gets older, she will hold it longer and most of the night.

??? If she gets trained to use a pee pad, won't it be so easy to bring some along on visits anywhere?

One thing that helped with Frisco, since he wanted sooooooo baaaaadly to be with us, was that I associated using his pad in his pen with 'OPEN THE DOOR', accompanied by serious happy celebrating and rambunctious playtime. No pee, no open door. Took a LOT of attention time, because you have to spend all the hours you can around the pen in order to keep the pup company when it's awake, and IMMEDIATELY open the door and go have fun on any semblance of a successful pee, but worth it I think, because he can pee on command if he has any now, and he's a part of the family and not apart from it, which works for everybody. I'm in favor of losing the crate.

Well for me there is another reason for needing to use a crate.. My puppy was sold to me and 2 days later was diagnosed with coccidia. She loves her poop like it's going out of style and she hates pinapple and two of the poop tabs I have tried. So unless I want her to re-infect herself constantly, I don't have much choice at this point.

We did and still do the expen with our 2. At night they go in for night, night. I have a crate, 2 beds with lots of blankies and their pad in there. They are older. They are loose on the first floor all day. They use their pad regardless of being in or out of their pen.

When we gone to family homes, they sleep with us in their bed and use the pad. :)

If the expen is out of the question, then you will have no other choice but to get up with your little one, especially at her age. Being 13 weeks old, her bladder is only but so big.

The expen is what we've used and still use. They have a crate, 2 beds/blankies and a pad in there. They are loose during the day and have no problems going back to use the pad. When we have traveled to family, they sleep in their bed and use the pad that we set out for them. But mine are older too. Good luck. :)
