How to know if Yorkie is too fat. MyYorkie fur baby is 15 months old. He wants to eat all the time. He is always hungry. I think he is at the right weight, but I don't know. He is a teapot baby(larger than normal), but I still love him. His name is Willie. He is 11 inches from floor to sholders, and 15 inches long. He weighs 11 lbs, does that sound right? I have never had a Yorkie before, so I don't know what is right. The vet never says anything, and I forget to ask. Can someone help me with this? He also shakes all over, if it has been too long between meals, so I feed him 3 times a day, plus a snack before bedtime. I will be so happy if someone can help me here. Thanks Patches and Willie  |
How does his body feel? because they are all a little different in size and structure, it is best to go by feel, when you put your hands on him can you still feel his structure underneath? You should be able to feel his bones but they should not be obvious or sticking out. It does concern me that he is still getting shaky between meals though. Have you had any blood work done on him? |
Wanted to add that my 15 month old also eats alot throughout the day, she is not overweight, but loves her food. |
How much do you feed him ? 1/4 cup at a time more/ less? His ribs should be palpable and his spine not. Feel his loin area and there should not be excess skin there. Wha tis most concerning are two thing 1) hungry all the time and 2) shaking in between meals. Either one or both may indicate an underlying problem. Please if you have not talked to your vet about this do so ASAP/ |
you should be able to feel his ribs when you rub your fingers across them. If you slide your fingers from his ribs down to his stomach, you should be able to feel a slight indentation. |
I know vets are different, but mine would be quick to tell if he felt one of my furbutt were overweight. |
