How much to feed? How often? Help. I've just been leaving a bowl of kibble out for Ruger all day. When it's empty I fill it and he just eats off and on all day, often taking the bits out of the bowl and eating them in another spot of the room. The bowl is small, and I've never seen him gulp down a lot of food at a time. I give him Nutro Healty Choice, Small Bites Puppy. He is now about 5 months old and weighs 6 lbs. I don't expect him to get much bigger, but the vet says he will fill out a bit and he's very healthy. Right now he certainly doesn't have a weight problem. :D Everything I read on the Net says not to leave a bowl of kibble out all the time, so I'm asking how much to feed and how often. The breeder's instructions were to leave a bowl of kibble out at all times which is why I've been doing that. It would be nice to get him on a schedule, but with the harsh winters here he is pad trained and goes inside, except when I take him for walks and he usually pees and poops then, too. I've never had a dog before so I don't really have a clue. |
FYI Nutro has a feeding chart on their web site. It says I should be feeding him about a cup a day, but I want to make sure I should be following those charts. Do I just weigh him a lot to make sure he's getting enough or too little? Thanks again. |
According to the Wellness chart I should be feeding mine (5 months, 4 1/2 lbs) 1 cup a day. I do not feed that much, she would never eat all that. She may finish 3/4 of a cup on a good day but most of the time she eats 1/2 a cup. She also gets treats like green beans and Yorkie Yummies through out the day. I also do not free feed. She gets 30 min. and if she does not finish it I cover it and add that to her next meal. She eats 3 times a day. |
I feed Harley twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening...but only 3/4 cups between both meals. Sometimes she leaves a little so 1/2 cup would probably be perfect for her. I think it just depends on their weight....but I wouldn't get him used to always having food in the bowl because down the road he could have a weight problem...my in-laws have a chihuahua and they fill the bowl everytime it's empty and now Lucy is obese and has breathing problems because of the excess weight on her small frame. |

Dry foods over here give daily amounts in grams or ounces, can be difficult to judge unless you have a good idea of their exact weight, it can also depend on your pets energy level. I'd love to be able to leave food down for my two, but though Rosie would eat enough to satisfy her Alfie would just try to eat the lot and make himself sick, so they get fed equal amounts twice a day with the odd treat inbetween. |
