shampoo help
 
Pixie has sensitive skin, does anyone know of a good shampoo and conditioner for that.
I noticed after I gave her a bath she had a few red blotches on her belly. I made sure she was rinsed good, I noticed the blotches evertyime I gave her a bath and finally It dawned on me durrrr ............her shampoo!
I was using the tearless baby powder scent shampoo for dogs at pet smart.

I'd recommend Bio Groom Tar Shampoo. Some refer to it as medicated. But because of what you are using, you may find success using a regular good shampoo like Coat Handler.

IMO Petsmart sells those products for dogs. Not for yorkies. :D:D:D

I answered without thinking. Are you blowing her dry? Not that it's cause, but it matters. Use a lot of air, no heat. If she still has them, look at her food. Is her coat growing normal?

I do blow dry her. I use heat though but low. I don't think it is her food bc it only happens after a bath usually the next day after her bath. Since it is winter I only give her a bath once a month. Sounds gross! lol
It usually last for about a week and goes away.
Where do your buy your Yorkie bathing products?

What do uou mean by growing normal? Pixie is 22 weeks and I think it is normal, I am new to this breed! lol can you tell. I did read the book Yorkshire terrier book. I am still learning.

Have you tried oatmeal shampoo? I have used it before on my Gracie when she had dry skin before and it works great. I am not sure of the brand, but if I think of it, I will let you know.:)

Anything that lasts a week is not normal whatsoever. I am leery about giving any advice without saying ask your vet. It's very abnormal. However, bating a yorkie once a month is just as abnormal IMO. I both once a week. Some yorkies can go 10 days. Once in a while there are yorkies that some moms will bath biweekly. Yorkies have hair, not fur. They need bathing more often than this. That may be part of the problem.
Cherrybrook, JB Pets & many other pets supply places have the products. You can also check the library here for resources. You can Google them & Pet shows have them. Why are you only bathing her once a month?

We use Cloudstar Buddy Wash, Buddy Rinse, and Buddy Splash....it's a great products, soap-free, and smells amazing. About 8 bucks a bittle but you use to little so the bottle lasts a long time. Snickers has a beautiful coat and after he gets bathed, it looks even better!! I HIGHLY recommend this product!!! The Lavendar Mint scent is heavenly!!

try a shampoo with oatmeal in it., I had to get some from my vet because Yoda has this same issue. he's great now :thumbup:

Hi Joyce,

I am sorry to hear Pixie is having some skin issues. :(

I did not bathe Zoey as often as some here do, in the beginning. However, as her adult hair comes in, it is becoming necessary to bathe her more. I now bathe her every week to 10 days and I use unscented baby wipes to clean private areas inbetween.

Not sure you need to hear what I use specifically since Zoey does not have any sensitivity issues, at least not so far. If you do, just let me know and I will be happy to share.

Hope someone has ideas or experience to help.

My little girl had dry skin & dull coat when I got her. I've been using Topiclean Oxy Med which contains alpha hydroxy, vitamins & omega 3 fatty acids. Groomer recommeded it. Think I can change now that she's stopped itching & coat looks & feels good. Think I"ll try what Vivian suggested. Sounds wonderful.
I only bath my yorkie once a month, also. Sometimes every 3 weeks. It's winter (cold & dry) here & I'm thinking the same as Spiritwings. It's bad enough having her go outside to relieve herself. Think she caught a cold. She was sneezing alot & coughing/hacking. Took her to vet & he put her on amoxicillin for ten days. But didn't clear it completely up. So I just babied her & now she's well. No coughing etc. So.....that's why I'm leary about bathing to often in winter.

I bought puppy shampoo from a local doggie salon and it has been better. I guess the stuff at pet smart is not that good! I wanted to tell you I did get a bow in today I bought the baby bows from the local drug store and they worked good for now.

for allergies and real sensitive skin i really like dr bronners mild unscented baby shampoo - my girl would get red bumps from shampoos so maybe try that it has all organic ingredients which i really like

my yorkie that has dry skin i wash once a month and my yorkie with allergies i wash her weekly to keep pollens and dust off her so it really depends on your dog.

Thanks, I was feeling like an idiot! lol I am new to the Yorkie breed and so much to learn. Thank God for all the helpful people on YT;)

One of my girls is super sensative so I tried an oatmeal shampoo and conditioner by Khiels. The Khiels brand can be found at any department store, it's an all natural line that has many other great doggie products. I use all their products as well.

I am glad to hear it is better. Okay, no one bash me - but I really do not think that just because a brand is sold by a particular dealer/retailer it is bad, I just think some ARE better than others and some react differently on our furbabies than others, just like us 'humans'. Also, if a furbaby has a particular issue or sensitivity, then we need to look at maybe special types to address the problem.

YEA on the bows!! I think for everyday and getting them 'use' to it, that the simpler and more importantly, the lighter, the better. That along with persistence, which I have not been so good at lately but will get back to it. Zoey's hair is getting longer up there now, so it is a necessity now - not just a stylish thing.

So glad you are finding things that work. :)

You are definitely NO idiot. We do have alot to learn, both of us and many others but you have done nothing wrong... please do not beat yourself up. You actually are an EXCELLENT mommy paying so close attention and seeking advice when you need it!

I am not discrediting myself but I just did find something regarding a difference in our pups and us.....

"All such shampoos should be pH-adjusted for dogs, which have the highest skin pH of any mammal (6.2 to 7.8), including humans (5.6). In addition, most good products contain essential fatty acids, which help provide nutrients to the skin"

Personally, I did not know this and just thought I would share.

As long as you keep your girls indoors after they are bathed no problem. This is why I asked if you blow dry. Assuming Daisy & Pixie are both yorkies, feel free to bath them if they are dirty. Due to the "rash" like concern I would refrain from fragrant products until you know what the cause may be. You have not said anything about cost being an issue, but it actually costs less to buy good pet products like I suggested. They're the best and also dirt cheap. If you can't find them, speak up & I'll post links. I will have time this week to figure out how to change my settings to enable a PM. I love helping newbies! People always helped me, they are still helping me.

Pixie sounds like lots of yorkies. Just do her last. You may heat her towel in the dryer, swaddle her in it for 10 minutes some prior to drying-no rubbing her coat though.

Thanks:) cost is not an issue when it comes to my fur babies;) Daisy is a jackrussell/poodle mix who has many minor health issues due to coming from a puppy mill, which I never knew about pet stores when my daughter bought her. Pixie is my first Yorkie and first dog that I ever got to decide on due to always letting the kids choose and now that they are grown (children) I chose my first Yorkie and she was a 30th wedding anniversary gift! Sorry about the details, I tend to get long winded sometimes.

i like the towel ind dryer idea that is great going to do that next bath time.

I agree i always go for unscented with my allergy dog very important

I know how you feel about finally getting to pick out the pet you want instead of for the kids. I know when I got Prissy and Jasmine I got to get what I wanted and I have to admit it was nice. I loved all the pets we have had in the past, but I had always yearned for these two little furbabies of mine. I hope your little one is doing better now and the red spots are going away. Thanks!! I have wanted a Yorkie for a long time. We have always had dogs when the kids were growing up and like you I loved them all.
It is so special when you finally get the dog of your dreams!! It is like when you have your first born;)
I know I am a crazy dog lover lady! lol My 28 year old son tells me that all the time! :D

I am using Italian Pet Spa - Italian Honey & Lavander ( by Prince Lorenzo Borghese) shampoo from the very first day Bear is brought home ( he is 5 months now).

It smells wonderfull for days after the bath and his hair is soft and shiny. Got it at PetsMart for about $10 for a 16.8 oz.

I am giving him bath once every 7-10 days.

I agree, we have been doing the dryer towel for a month or so and it really seems to work well... absorbs a decent amount of the water, she loves it and helps to cut down drying time.
