rabies shot or not next time?

When i adopted/rescued maddie, she had recieved her rabies shot that morning from the vet in the town where i adopted her. by that afternoon i had to take her to my vet because she was having a allergic reaction to the shot--she broke out in welts all over was swollen and was scratching like crazy!! so my vet gave her a shot of steroids and by morning maddie was fine. now that i been seeing all the trouble with rabies vac. im scared to death to let her get another one when the time comes knowing that she could possibly have even a more sever reaction the next time. I plan on discussing this with my vet the next time maddie is due for shots. (ohh and the rabies shot was the only one she got that morning) she had gotten her other shot a few weeks earlier. but never the less i wonder if she a good canidate for not receiving them. my vet had said that maddie would just need a steroid shot the next time she gets a rabies----but im still worried of the possible sideeffects exspecially after reading all the terrible reactions yorkies are having???

Piccolo does not receive vaccines anymore, due to vaccine complications - instead we give her titer tests. (Expensive, but worth it for her health.) I could not believe how much antibodies from the rabies vaccine, were still in her body. (Probably enough to last a lifetime.) So, that is one alternative. Please keep reading about the rabies vaccine for pups with severe reactions.
Here is one of many sites that discusses the problems. Personally, I would not revaccinate a dog with severe reactions.

This is definitely something to discuss at length with a good vet whose opinion you really trust (about vaccines).

I will tell what I would do -- if this were my baby and they had this kind of reaction to rabies, I would not be getting rabies again. I've had my boys to a wonderful Vet Derm (bc Marcel has enviro allergies - and Wylie was having skin issues...eventually was Dx w/ Atypical Cushings) -- anyway, I showed her areas on my boys bodies, both of whom have little "round spots" where vaccinations have permanently damaged the skin.

We had a long conversation about vaccination reactions. One thing she made *very* clear to me was that *any* time your baby has a reaction to a vaccine - the next time they have that vaccine, the body remembers, and the reaction could be much worse, or even life threatening -- so she said to take reactions very seriously. She says it's very realistic for owners to consider not repeating vaccines ever again when there is a reaction.

But like I said, hopefully you have a vet with whom you can discuss all this too :).

yes, i have a wonderful vet/friend------i didnt know that much in the beginning about little dogs and their reactions to vac. and now with all the reading ive done on the subject, it has brought up alot of concerns. Maddie isnt due for her 2nd rabies till sept. but i plan on talking to her b4 then. maddie will NOT be getting another one ever---im so afraid something alot worse would happen to her the next time, and i couldnt stand for anything to happen to her. i also dont know how she responded to the parvo shot, since she had gotten it a few weeks prior to me adopting her-so thats even questionable.

Thankyou for the feedback!;)

 this is totally my response, as well...If a human has a reaction to ANY food or drug, it is NEVER given again...why should it be any different for a little tiny yorkie, that weighs a fraction of we do??

That sure would have freeked me out completely.
I am so happy your baby is ok now. I, for one, would
never give that shot to my dog again for fear the
side effect would increase, which at times it can when
given again. It's not worth the risk. Look at it this way,
If this happened to a child would you be willing to put that
child threw it again with the chance of something terrible
happening? Of course not. I know in some states if your
vet states, due to a bad reaction, it is not mandatory
to give it to your pet but only if your vet states this.
Poor baby, you also must have been so scared.
Glad things worked out, who needs a seconed time:(

Great post! I also do a titer.

I know this is a huge decision for you and I suggest you do your own research to make a decision on what you feel is the best for your baby.

In California, the law requires all dogs to have rabies shots. Fortunately I have a vet who practices both conventional and alternative medicine and upon my request he give a "holistic dose" for the rabies - another words he gives the bare minimum he is able to under the state law.

All other vaccinations I always get a titer done prior and again request the "holistic" dosage.

I'm not a die hard holistic person and feel western medicine has it's uses but I do believe most vets tend to over vaccinate dogs/cats and it does more harm than good. I don't even use heartworm or flea/tick topicals and instead use lavender and cedar oils diluted in water to spritz them (and me) to keep the critters away. I live in Southern California and it has worked for me for several years.

Take you time and think it over - you will know what is right for you and your baby.

I know I am going off topic a little, and sorry to the OP. But, I have always wanted to ask this question about the law and rabies vaccines.

Background.... My Vets (regular and Dermatologist) could not get a health pass from the Kentucky State Vet for Piccolo, even though the vets tried and Piccolo has titers (for vaccines). I asked the vets if they were going to turn me in. Ha.

Even though it is the law, and I choose to break it for Piccolo's safety, what exactly can the law do? Fines or something else? Do you know or anyone else?

So, honestly, using titers puts us in an odd situation in this state. Thanks for anyone's response to this and again, sorry to the OP for a little bit of an off topic question.

maddieadoptedme 01-21-2010 03:46 AM

it is required by law here. but i dont want anything to happen to her again, knowing this time what could happen---im going to talk to my vet about getting a wavier. Maddies NOT getting the shot again, this much i have decided.

Dan & Corinne 01-21-2010 09:17 PM

In California some how the city gets information that you won a dog and we have to pay to get them licensed. You can't get a license without a rabies certificate. I don't know what happens if you ignore it - fine? They take the dog? I don't know and don't want to find out by tying it.

maddieadoptedme 01-22-2010 03:29 AM

i talked to my vet yesterday and we discused my concerns, she said that she wll give me a medical waiver for maddie. she said she actually has a few dogs that she has to do that with, due allergic reactions.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. Since I cannot get a waiver in Kentucky for Piccolo, I just hope we do not get caught. Ha. (Especially since her vets are the ones that recommended no vaccines.)

So glad that the OP will be able to get a waiver. Yea!
